Most of them partner with a body shop. They don’t do it in house

You know, the same thing happened to some Harley Davidson dealerships. Robinson Harley Davidson was the ONLY dealer in Volusia County (Daytona) from 1962-1993 when Harley Corp came knocking and said that you had to put in a boutique and sell their clothing line and MUST have X number of "units" on the floor at all times, basically telling them how to run their business. Robinson had about a 5,000 showroom & shop.

Daytona had been THE destination of East Coast "bikers" and enthusiasts since 1937, 86 years ago and is still going strong, and now its BikeWeek in March and Biketoberfest later in the year.

When Harley Corp came to Robinson, with their demands, the old man decided to sell the "dealership" side and still do repairs and maintenance. In comes the deep pockets, big check book and the bells and whistles with Rossmeyer, who was in the automobile industry. Rossmeyer became the largest Harley dealerships, with 13 dealerships in Florida, Colorado, Massachusetts, Mississippi and Tennessee. Bruce Rossmeyer died in a motorcycle accident back in 2009 and the family held on as long as they could, but times change.

In 2022 the Rossmeyer family sold out to Ed Morse Automotive group, with son Teddy Morse as chairman and CEO now called Teddy Morse's Harley.

The same thing happened to Harley Davidson of Atlanta and forced them into building a huge new dealership with 20 service lifts. I'm sure it's happened elsewhere too, and in different industries. There is even a tractor dealership that at one time was small and now it's forced to put on displays that would almost make the Blue Angels Navy Demonstration Team have envy.

My suggestion about your paint would simply be figure what your expenses would be for lodging and food and your time taking it back to the dealer that made the repairs vs. finding someone closer that would still do a good job and warrant their work for you locally. At least that was you could feel as if you had control over it. Sometimes it's just better to take the loss, complain about it for a few minutes then get over it. I know it's about the principal of the thing, but after is paid for, you are out some money, and not having to deal with a heart attack over stress.

Good luck, and thanks for reading my rambling on.

    Stay away from anything deery

Cedar Rapids Toyota is solid. Most of my vehicles have come from there. They’ve been able to find me what I wanted which a lot of other dealers won’t do and will only sell what’s on the lot.

there’s a couple body shops in CR and Waterloo I trust to do work… and a whole bunch I don’t.

I'm about an hour and a half from Waterloo, I think. We're near Marengo. That would be doable. I want to thank everyone for the truly excellent suggestions! Again, great forum.

^This, if you decide to go local. Worst they could tell you is no.

also fwiw, I don’t think your expectation or feelings about the crap situation are unreasonable on their face, esp. if you hadn’t planned on moving

Unfortunately typical. I had the same thing with my last Honda car. In that case, I had to get the car to the dealership to perform warranty body shop work.

That being said, if the work went through your insurance, the insurance company may warranty. Ask your insurance company just in case.

I'd read up on the super white paint issues.

Interesting. All the rest of the paint is 5x5. What they repaired is pealing, just the clear coat. So I read up as suggested, and the original paint has no clear coat...wtf? Man they really balled this up...at least it appears. The truck from 2016, when I got it, is garaged nightly, and when not in use.

    To OP, what others wrote.
My local Toyota dealerships was brought out by Servco Pacific, apparently had BS drama at local Toyota dealer. Servco Pacific is the biggest Toyota dealer in Hawaii.

if that was an insurance repair, you should be dealing with your insurance that initiated the repair, not the location you brought it.

at least in my area, the insurance company is the one warrantying the work for the life of the vehicle.
