I still have my 2001 and also have a 2018 TRD Pro and a 2018 TRD OR (I live in a few different places). I'd sell the 2018's in a heartbeat but would never think of selling my 1st Gen. Here she is after a mild suspension upgrade over stock.

I would be all over it if Toyota came out with a new smaller 1st gen sized truck. Something that would compete with a Ford Maverick, but be a true body on frame truck. Realistically, it won't happen because the smaller, less expensive and therefore less profitable truck, would steal sales from the Tacoma, so I'm not holding my breath waiting for this to happen.

I can still smell the interior of my 96. I had a powertrax rear locker with a flowmaster exhaust. It was a medium Pewter color, Beautiful. I received compliments all the time. GREAT TRUCK!!

I have a neighbor that has a very nice looking first gen sitting in his driveway. I don't think I've ever seen that truck move so I assume it needs work. One of these days I'm going to knock on his door and inquire about it.

Those first gen 4 door trucks with the short bed are just sexy as hell. I drive by one every time I leave my neighborhood and I can't get over that look.

    I never owned a 1st gen, but they are so beautiful. I had a 2nd and now my 3rd, but I wish I owned a 1st.

Great trucks. Mine had about 165,000 (young for a Yota) on it when it was totaled, it had its creaks and noises but it started up every time. First few months I had it (bought it used) had to replace the water pump, timing belt, and valve cover gaskets because they started to leak. Maintenance items for those trucks. Along with my fair share of rust that I had to clean up. But like I said, it started right up and drove every time. Loved the simplicity.

If my 2004 had a manual transmission, I would never have bought the 2020. I drive my 1st Gen about once a week and every time I do, it puts a smile on my face. I do like rowing the gears on the 2020 and certainly enjoy the ease of the access cab doors and the convenience of CarPlay; I just wished the overall truck had retained the small truck feel of the 1st Gen.IMG_0169.jpg

My new cars all served their purpose...albeit with family, raising 2 daughters. The only truck I ever owned was used and I needed while living on Oahu: 1985 Isuzu Pup extended cab. Since I could only ship one vehicle to my next military assignment, I needed a transitional daily driver before departing.

We came to Hickam AFB with a 1996 Honda Accord LX, purchased new in Abilene, TX. We left Hawaii with a 2003 Honda Pilot EX/with DVD player.

Prior to that, I had a new 1993 Isuzu Rodeo 5-speed--My first experience with an SUV. I traded in the Rodeo to get the Accord because my wife could not drive stick-shift. (I had a hard time teaching her and she could not be bothered with all the dynamics/it was overwhelming)

I originally wanted the Tundra but my wife insisted (heavily suggested) I get a smaller truck. After test driving in a similar SR5 DCSB, I was hooked.

While my truck was in-transit, I sat in a Tundra and realized my wife was right. (Don't tell her) lol

I won't go into comparison details but I am happy with my 22 gallon/V6/Auto/DCSB Sport.

The 1st Gen Tacoma is a handsome truck. I can't make a comparison since my purpose in picking a vehicle changed when my daughters grew up and got married...it's just me and my wife now and our 2 cats.

I wish I could have kept my ‘98. Regular cab, 4x4, 5 speed, 2.7… not easy to find these days. I bought it as a single man, but it never would have suited the family of 4 I have now, so I sold it when we were expecting our first child. I love my ‘21 OR, it’s the best truck I’ve ever owned, but the ‘98 was just cool and really fun to drive because it was so small. I miss it still, but I’ve kept my ‘97 4Runner for over 20 years now, so it still scratches the ‘90s Toyota truck itch for me…

Hell yeah man, I've been on the lookout for a decent enough Mazda B2200 to replace my first truck, I want to make one a show truck essentially. Great paint, great wheels, great stereo etc.
