Some of you may remember I was here back in mid May getting information about the new 2019 TRD OR Tacoma's and trying to decide between that and a 4Runner TRDOR Premium. One factor at the time, I was moving cross country with my two hounds and did. I love my 4Runner, have no issues with it and it had done everything I expected it to and still does.

    So what's the problem?

There are a LOT of 3rd generation Taco's in this town, in my neighborhood and the more I see them, the more I want one. At the same time I have a friend that is a member of this forum, that has her 2019 TRD PRO Taco in the dealer getting a fuel pump replaced as the truck left her stranded on the highway.

I told her I would go to my local Toyota dealership on Saturday (24th) and take a test drive. I wanted to confirm some of the things she was telling me about how her's rode and my curiosity always needed a Taco test drive.

After the test drive of a TRDOR Premium on Saturday ... I wanted one, still want one today.

Over the weekend all the pros and cons of each truck played over in my mind. Each has it's own positives. I have no plans of trading nor selling my 4Runner and the 2019 TRDOR Premium Taco would be my 2nd form of transportation.

Am I insane to have both trucks?

There are times I could use a bed but few. I have no space to store nor do I want a small trailer for those times I need to haul stuff that could not be carried inside the 4Runner. There are also days I just like driving a different vehicle ... off-road or highway. I have no plans to tow a trailer but do know the Taco tows 6,400 compared to the 5,000 pounds on the 4runner.

Why not buy an older one?? I like all of the new features of the 2019.

    Negotiations are starting at $37K

    Insanity?

So you don't have a place to park a trailer but you do have a place to park a second ~35k vehicle?

Crazy? I'd say asking complete strangers for financial advice qualifies. :)

If you need a second mode of transportation, get whatever you want!

If I already had a 4Runner, my second vehicle would be much better on gas than a tacoma, especially if I didnt need the bed.

Lol. Definitely not insane. You just got bit by the Toyota bug and now you have Toyota fever! There's no cure...and this forum will only make it worse :bananadance:

If you can comfortably afford both then hell ya!

I had not thought of the parking spot for a trailer that way ... LOL

Ah, not asking about financial advice ... just my mental condition. :frusty::frusty:

Probably, but that's merely the statistics talking and has nothing to do with any other personal choices.

If you can afford it and it won't cause a divorce, have at it. Lots of folks on here do "his and hers" with a Tacoma and a T4R. Totally respectable.

I wish I could get my wife into a 4Runner instead of her Prius, but it's looking like the tallest she'll go is a Camry hybrid. Woman wants her hybrids.

Thanks for the answer ... I feel better already and may have to slide down to the dealer right after the vet appointment for the bloodhound. It is definitely a "fever" and you are right, time spent on this forum makes it worse, especially the off-road stories and photos .. :D

We had a Prius, great car, drove it to 250k miles and of course great mpg. Honestly, I think hybrids are the worst scam ever launched upon car owners. Pay more to get better gas mileage and when the proprietary $5000 hybrid battery dies the car is inoperable even though the engine and everything else is fine.

Yes...but there are still tons of 99 Prii running out here so it's like "I dare anyone to kill the hybrid battery."

Plus they're dragsters for the first 10 feet.

The joy of money is buying shit you don't need. Buying a $35K item because of "want" instead of "need" is fine as long as its affordable to you and doesn't cause any financial stress or hardship.

Also, if a friend of yours came to you with the same exact situation, what advice would you give them?

And finally, which would you regret more, getting the Tacoma, or not getting the Tacoma?

Didn’t you get $7,500 back curtesy of the US government?

If you rarely need a truck, rent one when needed..

If you need a second vehicle get what you want. I'd get something different but won't tell you what to get.

What would you use the truck bed for? Sounds like you will have two vehicles (Notes if not paid off), insurance and maintenance. If you need interior space and bed I would just go Tundra or wait till the new model coming out next year.

My wife drives a 16 T4R SR5 and I have an 18 Taco TRD OR loaded & modded. Both are great vehicles, but I can't fathom owning both myself. They're far too similar to make sense for me. If I were to buy a 2nd vehicle, I'd keep my truck for the utility (do a lot of DIY) and buy a sports car. 2 vehicles should be for 2 different purposes IMO. 2 daily drivers just seems boring and pointless.

I believe this even more after my wife was awarded a free car for a year. It was a 3cyl turbo ford compact SUV. She drove it out of a sense of obligation and for the 2x MPG. The 4Runner simply sat in the driveway until she drove it 5-6x/mo on the weekends.

So are you crazy? No, but I think you could do something better with your 2nd vehicle purchase.

I'm keeping my Tacoma and after it's paid off I'm buying a Ford F-350 king ranch as my daily driver and turning the Tacoma into even more of a toy. Buy what you want. Life's too short.
