Am I nuts for wanting to tow with an X-runner?

I've never owned a truck (except SUVs) nor towed, but my wife wants a food trailer, and I want a mini-truck, specifically an X-Runner. I'm weird and love MTs (2 of our 21 cars we've owned in the past were automatics (just because there are no desirable modern MT SUVs)), and unique vehicles. Nothing except an old school Lightning tickles me (except no MT), except my wife doesn't like the looks of the Lightning.

We actually have a 2020 Range Rover Sport SVR, which is very capable of towing, but I don't want to put the wear on the Rover since it's already "unreliable", and I'd have to go back to factory 22s to tow.

IMHO, the OTHER smart and logical thing to do is just to buy a 2015+ Raptor, which she likes and has a 8000 lb tow capacity. I don't like the turbo V6 noise and it's HUGE and not nimble like smaller trucks. Fun fact, I also had a V8 Raptor R that I was 2nd on the waitlist for and could have bought, but I passed on it due to wanting to keep the SVR.

I know X-Runners can only tow 3500 lbs, but I plan to do a supercharger, a BBK, and rear helper bags (and whatever supporting mods to tow). I have my eye on a supercharged X-Runner now.
But fundamentally, besides tires, the X-Runner isn't much different from a regular Tacoma for towing. Ride height is the same despite the ground effects making it look lower.

From what I've read, the tow package shouldn't really materially affect towing, as MTs don't need a transmission cooler, and I can install an oil cooler. But on paper, Tacos with a tow package is rated for 6500 lbs. Food trailer will be 3500-4500 lbs.

Am I nuts for wanting a 15 year old sport truck to tow?

i towed a 16 foot trailer with my lowered x-runner no bags or supercharger 10 or so 2 hour drives texas highways at 80 mph never complained, frankly my 2019 trd offroad 6mt is more annoying to tow with do to the overly high reverse gearing. only thing i would say is make sure your hitch is level and if no brake controller or weight in the bed be real intentional with your tongue weight

It’s obviously not ideal but you can get away with it. Just be aware of that and drive accordingly rather than treating it like a sport truck while simultaneously towing. When what you’re towing weighs as much as the lead vehicle you have to plan ahead. While pulling is what everyone talks about stopping is what allows you to get home safely so make sure not to skip that part ie a decent brake controller.

Thanks to both of you guys for the feedback. Much appreciated! I'll definitely keep in mind a brake controller too.

Forget about an x runner for your towing, it is a really bad idea for what you’ll be towing. The weight you state starts at your max tow weight and goes way over it. No matter what you do to the vehicle you can’t change or increase the official factory max tow capacity. You’ll be towing over capacity and there are too many problems with that to list including legal liability should you have an injury accident. What ever mods you add including a supercharger won’t increase the tow capacity by a single pound.
Just get yourself an adequate tow vehicle that is rated at least a couple thousand pounds more than what you plan to tow.

I don’t mean this to be rude.
But you might want to rethink your (wife’s) business venture if you’re already having a hard time making a “poor” decision. Unless of course, the food truck is “for fun” and not a main source of income.

Sell the Range Rover and buy a full size truck. That’s what I’d do.

You don’t need a 70k raptor to pull a food truck. Keep it simple, save your profits before you spend them.
