Am I paying too much?

Tomorrow I hope to own my first Tacoma.

I have owned six Corollas but never a Tacoma, mainly due to their price. I have a 2021 Nissan Frontier SV 4wd, 6' bed Crew Cab with 86000 miles. It has a warranty that is good through 100k at which time I am afraid it will implode. To date it has not had any problems at all. I have decided to sell it and get my first Tacoma.

I searched and researched until my head spun and decided on a 2015 TRD Sport 4WD with only 30k miles. Mint condition inside and out.

I am probably paying too much but I really like this generation and the 4.0 engine. The 2015 gets good reliability ratings.

$34k is the price. It is a rare find so I am paying a premium I guess.

Yes, you are paying a premium for one of the best years of the generation.
2013-2015 best of the 2 Gens.

Now, imma bring rain to the parade.
    They all blow up eventually.

    Some sooner than others.
If I were a betting man, I’d bet the Nissan would go 150k-180k before it starts eat money for repairs.

The Tacoma, can go 350k IF you do the maintenance as scheduled.
The 2 biggest ones are, of course, fluids.
The trans can develop a shudder if you don’t service it regularly. (60k is my recommendation)

And you can have timing issues if the oil isn’t changed regularly.
5k miles no matter what oil you use.

Coolant at 100k/10 years on the first change.
Then 5 years/50k after the first change.

But it’s so easy to change just do 5 years 50k.
    Even for the first change.

Toyotas tolerate neglect better than most, but they WILL succumb to it sooner or later.

Do you need a Tacoma or do you just need a truck? Sounds like the Frontier has been a good rig, why not just keep it and save your money?

There are no good deals out there on a Tacoma. They simply don't exist

For what it's worth i paid $38k out the door for my 2015 brand new at the dealer in 2016. That's in Seattle with full west coast markup and a line of hungry bros right behind me. I didn't negotiate squat, I paid the man and drove it off the lot. 180k miles later and it's still flawless

Well except for a wheel bearing and a t-case input seal. And squeaky leaf springs. And shit gas mileage. And..

    Good luck haha

I just don't want the Frontier to take a dump after the warranty runs out. The Toyota is a "forever" truck, not sure the Frontier is. I get your point about just saving the money...you just made me go back to questioning my decision again. Lol

30k miles is barely broken in.

    30k is brand new

Buuuuut.. think about what you could do with $34k and a Nissan that runs fine. You could literally take a year off from work and drive around

Yeah, the only good deals on a Tacoma, is for the seller.
    The buyer……… not so much.

Not gonna line. My 07’ with 180k on it is only worth about $7,500. Maybe $8,000 on a good day.
The only reason I don’t sell it? I won’t pay the price of a new or used one. Plus, I bought other peoples problems before, not fun.

Figure I’ll keep mine until quits it running.

That $34k could be worth $41k in 5 years.
Or over $50k in 10 years of you play the bank rates right.

And that’s if you don’t contribute anything to it monthly.

    A $200 a month contribution, brings you over $54k in 5 years.
And I bet that Frontier will still be running in 5 years.

The REAL reason I want the Tacoma is it has a CD player and the Frontier doesn't. Ha!

I could get a newer generation Tacoma with twice the miles for about the same price.

Or I could find the next NVIDIA to invest in.

Sounds like you guys don't want me to buy a Tacoma. Too much common sense advice here.

Lol "forever" truck  It's a 10 year-old truck that sat, which means things will leak like a sieve. Common areas are the steering rack and timing cover. Other known leak points include the front main seal, front diff CV shaft seal, transfer case output flange seal... Also watch for rodent damage under the intake manifold, and stuck secondary air injection system switching valves.

A cd player?! Dang you are old!

Haha just kidding. Do you have a smartphone? Just get one of those Bluetooth "antennas" that your radio will pick up and then you can listen to Spotify or something

Maybe, but use two, and a few others, adhere to the “don’t fix what’s not broke” saying.

Just wait a bit, there be some guys jump in to convince you to buy it.

Seriously, If you can afford it, and you want it, buy it.
You only live once. (As far as we know).
My problem is/was, money isn’t easy to come by.
Parts to fix a truck are……(mostly).

I settled for one with a cd player because I couldn't find one with an 8 track or cassette.

I have hundreds of CDs and don't do the digital thing with music on my phone.

It’s over priced. But, it sounds like the heart wants what the heart wants. Lots of people make a living off of people who overpay. I’m one of them that have contributed to their success.

I can afford it if I sell my Frontier. I guess I also like the off road capabilities of the Tacoma. I explore the eastern Sierra a lot.

The factory hecho-en-Mexico stereo is one of the first things to die in Tacomas. Just get an aftermarket stereo with CD player or connect a USB CD drive like the luddites in the 4Runner forum have done.

Did I see you can sell your Nissan with 86k miles for $22k and buy Tacoma with 30k miles for an additional $12k? I might do that deal. A lot depends on what you use it for and any planned upgrades. Off roading, pavement only, camping, traveling??
Downsides are not much is being developed for them anymore, and it is old.
Upside is depending on usage it could last another 10-15 years?
Mine is 2013, bought in 2015 with 23k miles, paid a bit over $30k out the door. They were hard to come by and holding their value.
Retired 3 years ago, now have 154k miles and overlanded all over the western US in groups and solo. It has been and continues to be a blast. I am happy with the Tacoma because there is a certain confidence that it will not die on me in the middle of nowhere.
That said I always carry a Garmin InReach for backup.

Why not go for an Off-road model if you need more off-road capability?
The TRD Off-Road has a rear locking differential. The Sport does not.
Although it does have the brake actuated limited slip differential.
Which works surprisingly well. (The Off-road has this too)

I have and early model Off-Road. I’m open differential until locked.
I got no limited slip of any kind.

You have to get a 2009+ before you get the brake LSD.

I was thinking the same way. Swore I’d stay with cds and cassettes.

Then when I got the Tacoma and decided to upgrade, my installer friend said to forget cassettes. Insisted I’ll be happier with digital. He is definitely right. It’s the sound quality. Think of it like this. Cassette is black and white tv. Cd is color tv. Digital is hdtv. It’s so much better I don’t touch my cds anymore. But for the older stuff, the sound quality is close to the same.
