I live in CO and have been trying new trails, last one was Kingston Peak. I’m in a stock 22 TRD OR MT with upgraded tires (stock size) and sliders There’s a section that’s steep with rocks that are bigger and looser than I usually attempt. About 3 times dropped off the end of the rock and heard a loud thud and was sure I’d see some trail damage underneath, but when I crawled under to look I couldn’t see much besides a few rough spots on the frame and some scratches on the fuel skid. Definitely slammed the undercarriage down on some rocks…am I worrying too much? How tough are these trucks?

If independently wealthy, then continue as is. If not then you might want to at least invest in some appropriate under carriage armor.

Gotta minimize total overall ground contact by supplementing with speed.

How far and hard you can push a Tacoma is dependant on how much spare cash you have.

Is the stock protection worthless? Not sure how far to go with new plates without being overkill. I’m typically on pretty moderate trails, don’t think I have the stomach for much more treachery.

The stock skid plate is sheet metal. I dented mine real bad before bigger tires and a lift.

Dents in the frame and rock rash on the skids aren't the biggest of deals as long as the truck continues to track straight. You may want to consider protecting the sensitive bits like the difs, transfercase, and trans with appropriate armor.

And the stock skid plates aren't worth a damn. You can damn nearly fold them by hand.
