In my humble opinion a light tint on the tail-lights is far less dangerous than the red turn signals that come from the factory.
I have trained my foot to move to the brake when I see a flash of red. I hope is that most other people have also trained their feet as well.
Due to the nature of refractive light a (light) tail light tint can vastly reduce the appearance of red in the lenses while having only a minimal impact on the backlit brightness.
So at the end of my ramble here my point it that with a light tint your rear lights will be 100% more lit when you step on the brakes than they were with your lights off.

Really, you trained your foot? What tricks does it know?

If this wasn't a problem why did you need brighter lights?

So I thumbed through 5 pages of responses and nobody brought up the fact that required safety features such as lights and windshields have DOT numbers. To get the approval manufacturers need to mount the object to a road going vehicle it has to pass standardized tests on light emission, transmission, and color.

TL:DR You are a bellicose troll playing fast a loose with vanity items.

Is it legal to paint your tail lights where you live? In Az you cannot and the cops love getting people for it.

Looks cool but not for me. each is own.

As for Marylandstan it is a NOGO on tinted lights. Will the officer pull you over, only if he/she is looking for a reason.
