3 gallons may seem like an excessive reserve but for me that's only 75 miles which some places isn't far enough. Nice to know 30-40 is worry free when the light comes on.

I have had to put 21 in. Forgot I was out of gas when I got home Friday after work. Got in it Monday and started driving, hoping I would make it to the gas station I use. A couple of miles around here can mean the difference of 50 cents a gallon. I made it..... but it took a real full tank. Not 17. Lol

That’s not true for the majority of vehicles, including the Tacoma. It’s very dependent on the fuel pump used and how it’s setup in the tank. Running it empty then only filling it up to 1/4 then run to empty again, do that constantly and I’d agree with you, it’s not great for the pump. But run it to empty then fill up it’s fine and exactly how it’s designed to be used.

I’ve run mine to 45 ~ 50miles passed 0 several times and get about 20gal in the tank. So I’d say a little more than 3gal, maybe 4. But 3 is close enough.

This gets 6, 8 if I take it easy, and has the same size tank as the Tacoma. But it does have 2.5 times the HP and just over 2.5 times the Torque of the Tacoma.

I know its definitely not as good as my other (now broken and dead) vehicle. But that's not the tank size. That's the engine and mpg. The other would display 530miles to empty when full.. the Tacoma only shows a lil over 300 and it has a bigger tank. But again mpg is the difference there.

I am surprised no one has said it's Trump's fault yet. On a serious note my understanding with some vehicles is that if depends how far the filler tube goes into the tank. Sometimes the manufacturer will purposely place it further in the tank so topping off does not happen like some of us do. Fuel pump makes sense. Who knows my 16 offroad says 384 miles till empty when full. I have taken it 16 mi left on one occaision.. Took 19.5 gal or so.

I’ve run mine down to the middle of the E. Put in 20.5 gallons.

Use to do the same with my first gen. Still working just fine at 209k when I traded it in.

I don't understand the fuel pump thing either. It's always brought up on forums. Isn't the fuel pump cooled by the fuel running through it, not the fuel surrounding it. There is no way Toyota or other makes would design pumps to fail unless you kept the tank 1/4 filled or more. You would hear of failures all the time if that was the case.

No tank can be fully filled, vapor prevents this. I imagine cold days fill higher than warm.

Sure, but how much? Enough to drive 100 yards further on a cold day?

When the dealer first gased up my 18 tacoma, it said 385 miles til empty, then after I filled it up it said 373, then 360, now it just says 330 or if im lucky 355. I have no idea why, I just go by the needle now.

Gas is metered based on a 60F baseline volume. At 100F you end up with ~3% less by weight and at 32F ~2% more. It's volume is not temp stable. Fuel temp affects fill volume more so than the air temp in the tank. Underground tanks take longer to heat up during the day but still, buy in the morning when you can.
