Yeah, I really regret not just doing the test earlier, but it's not like I could afford even a cheap radio in middle school lol

This is neat, I just found out that the TM-V71A's head and microphone can be extended with RJ45 couplers.

It's true. Works great too. The Yaesu 100DR mic can be extended in the same manner using 6-pin, 6-conductor RJ12 coupler.

This is why I almost didn't buy the mounting kit for my TM-V71A, but I still wasn't sure where I was going to mount it so I wanted the bracket for all the options.

For my Yeasu, I ordered the bracket only, directly from them. $8 shipped and then made my own cables.

I read some folks have issues with noise on cat5e and an antenna on a plane that intersections any point between the handheld mic and the transceiver unit. I've been running cat5e w/ an rj45 coupler, but I have a magmount on the roof. Works fine so far.

    In other news.

Ran APRS for the first time w/ the TM-V71A. Have to say, despite the sh**** interface of APRSDroid, it was relatively usable in the Mojave Road this past weekend. The ability for it to repeat/retransmit over several APs is definitely a killer approach to solving the problem of lacking LOS transmission. Though my friends I was riding with didn't have APRS, I did. I was able to see lots of people in the surrounding area throughout the trip, that was extremely impressive during the breaks we took.

Needless to say, everybody is picking up some sort of APRS implementation immediately. Some are going w/ Easy Digi/handheld/spare phone. Others are going full D710GA/Mobilinkd/Android tablet.

Next trip up we'll be able to see everybody's positions regardless of the pace they take.

I didn't realize we had a HAM BS thread. Just found it so I thought I'd say hi to all. Callsign is KJ7WTF and I'm up in northern Idaho. I'm a Comms Tech for a sheriff's department so radios are my life. I'm gonna have to go back and read through all 130+ pages of this.

I just use hamstudy.org. It's free, it's super easy, and I learned what I needed in 2 hours to pass the test.

I'm considering getting into HAM, I know all of the questions have been asked and I've been to all the sites, so what's everyone's reason for being HAMS?

It`s a great hobby to meet good people that have the same interest in electronics etc. Anyone can send an email, or get on a phone and text or call, it`s self satisfaction when you build your own antenna and talk to people on the other side of the world on a piece of wire.

Hams have saved lives in natural disasters for years and years where there was no power, no communications what so ever. During Matthew, Hams will save lives and it will never hit the media but Hams don`t care, they will continue to be public servants and will never ask for anything in return.

Ham Radio will always work when nothing else does.
