There are many fast/good ways to pass the tests.

What I meant by it`s not the best way to learn was, anyone can memorize answers and take a test.

The real learning and fun begins when you jump in with both feet and start putting a mobile together, learning electronics, put a base station together, building antennas etc.

Can someone explain to me what IRLP is used for? Like is it to get voice onto the internet then sent to another repeater where its retransmitted somewhere else. A way to communicate long distances with low power by using the internet?

That and the added benefit of being able to use it to connect multiple repeaters together.

    ---

Prior to IRLP, you'd have to use a crossband repeater with a yagi at another repeater to connect nodes or use a BBS style system with a phone line running 24/7, an MPLS style (t1) line that guaranteed bandwidth and latency between multiple nodes, or satellites repeating your transmission etc.

IRLP gives hams a more flexible solution.

Like sending a transmission across multiple repeaters that are linked together through the internet?

just got my General a couple weeks ago and I'm not a very good book learner. I do best with hands on learning. I read the book and watched the video tutorial by Dave Kessler KE0OG on youtube. Took the practice tests for a week on hamexam.org

It might be a while till I can put an HF station together so I'll start looking at the the Extra class manual.

I have searched and searched but I can not find what I'm looking for. I believe somewhere on TW someone had posted a link to website that basically had a study guide condensed down to a few pages of everything you need to know for the a Tech test. Almost like notes you would take in class. Anyone have a link or know what I'm talking about??? TIA

Go to KB6NU website. I think you were able to download it for free but now you have to pay for the manual. Good luck, I would like to upgrade to Extra but I am a little busy.

I've been reading the material for the extra, I'm starting to wonder if the effort is really worth the small amount of spectrum I would get to use as an extra

A lot of DX stations hang out in extra class portions. They stay out of the general section.

i've heard that before, but what is the logic behind that? All of HF is for DX'ing of some sort be it domestic or international. Why stay out of General section?

I am happy with a general license for now but I can see myself looking to upgrade. It's up to you and what you want to do with ham radio.

Since the Joplin tornadoes, there has been a bit of push to stop using IRLP to connect repeaters because the Missouri ARES group lost communication in the disaster area. In Eastern MA, we have a super generous guy, N1LHP, who has built a network of 5 repeaters all connected the old fashioned way. I think I like it better than way.
