Ok, gotcha. I'll probably just end up saying "fuck it" and drilling the hole. May as well do it the best way from the get go, as opposed to chasing gremlins like I have been with the CB.

How do you like the atas? I have been looking at tarheal and scorpion, they seem to have better reviews

I have talked all around the world with it. A have a yaesu 857D in the truck. The thing is don't adjust the antenna when driving. That's how they screw up and get bad reviews. That's why you see two antennas on the truck. The one is going into the 2 meters and 70 cm side of the radio. The 120A I will set to 40 or 20 meters. So I can change between frequency when driving.

Awesome. That is exactly what I want. An 857D! Do you have a second radio or do your 2m/70 off the 857D?

all done from the 875D. The only time I have my yaesu 8900R in the truck. Is when I have to run cross band. I use my yaesu 60R to get back to the truck. So the truck cross band to the repeater. Some times I work a function and can't make the repeater with the 60r only.

The FT-819 is an awesome and cheap rig, around $600. The FT-857D is the cream of mobile HF rigs, but hard to find under $900. The 857 has an internal antenna tuner and is basically plug and play with the Yeasu atas 120. The 819 doesn't have the tuner, but an external isn't that expensive and usually better. The 857D also has uhf/vhf, the 819 doesn't.

Tarheal and scorpion also make screw driver antennas, saves you from having an antenna farm on your roof. Tarheal makes a mini, that is comparable in size and function as the atas 120. The full size antennas are beasts, but awesome.

You will need to ground/bond your entire truck, every door, hood, tailgate.... everything needs to have the best ground possible. This is a PITA, but well worth the troubles.

Now, as you can see, I have the knowledge... I am still looking for my money tree.
