I want a 710. I really want a 710. Every time I look at radios, the 710 is the benchmark. I keep coming back to a 710. Hope that helps

Cant go wrong with the D710, easiest radio to use and program with just using the MIC

I was comparing both the 400DR and the D710 to each other when I decided that I wanted dedicated APRS rig. Took me a few weeks of reading and watching reviews and finding everything I could about both radios. Ultimately I went went the D710.

That is the one I have been leaning more toward, and I allready have a 20+ year old Kenwood that I have liked. My brother got the 4100A, he is bringing it up this weekend to let me check it out.

the 400DR or the D710 should be your 2 choices if you're interested APRS functions

@Phessor , I've got the little brother TM-V71a and I love it. 2 seconds to program. Really easy to navigate. Memory group use while traveling is a breeze. Clean performance. Just make sure to keep a Kenwood mic on there so the TX doesn't get noisy. Wish I could have gotten away with a CAT cable.

I have had my Kenwood TM-V7A for over 20 years, it won't transmit anymore so I have been using it as a scanner.

The only thing I don’t like about my 710 is the screen. It just doesn’t seem to have a good combo of brightness and contrast that works on bright sunny days.

Not sure why but I am partial to yaesu. Super easy to use plus real reliable.

Only catch with yaesu is it is not a 2 way tnc- so can send data from the radio to a tablet with it, but not vice versa.

Also side note on a different topic. For those with double cabs who take their antennas off, a great place to store them is under the rear seatbacks. There is an open space there that is free when the seats are in their usual spot. You can access it while the seats are in place too. You can see my 2m/70cm and cb antennas there now.

I usually just leave my antennas on... but the truck will be parked in an unknown lot for a few days so....

Kenwood 710 all the way. I love mine. It’s the only radio I’ve had where I can not use it for a few months and come back and still be able to program and use without looking at the manual again.

Which Kenwood gave up the ghost? I've a TM G707A. Installing it in my 2010 Taco will require separating the headset. So I'm looking for the cord (it's proprietary to Kenwood) and suggestions for my 20 year old radio.

Mine is a Kenwood TM-V7A, it still receives, so I am going to keep it mounted as a dedicated scanner.

This weekend I'm working at the New England Forest Rally. Super excited about it. It's my first race event that I will be working and I hear that it's one of the best. I just got my v71a all set up with crossband repeat so those pesky Maine mountains won't get in my way. Anyone else worked something like a rally before?

Played net control for Sandblast Rally in Cheraw, SC, years ago. Keep your ears and eyes open at all times... Have a team member close by when you need a nature break. Keep water, first aid and fire extinguisher near by.

Worked an actual honest-to-gosh wagon train this past week. Rode with the medic--also a ham--who invited me. This year, no emergencies and only needed to coordinate the various moving parts of the 78-person wagon train. No cell phones were allowed, and that didn't matter as there was no coverage and no towers for miles. Found out one of the teamsters was a ham as well as my ride-along when I drove. Took my new-to-me-for-just-five-days 2010 Taco. Had no problems whatsoever. Changed the air filter and the cabin filter when I got back though.

Nice. You in New Hampshire? Did I hear you talk about that on the Interstate repeater?

Western Maine is great. Get high enough and you get all sorts of simplex coming your way on 2 and 70
