No benefit. It's actually best to have a good NMO drilled in the roof. Try to get a Larsen, but others will work better than a mag mount. I've owned my 2018 for 4 months and already drilled a hole. Keep in mind, if you're going to do a roof rack or something, you'll need to plan that out.

I do plan to go with a Larsen, and no plans for any roof rack, so I think I’m good.

Ive been running a Comet SBB-2 dual band since I put the radio in. Been really happy with it. I've hit repeaters up to 43 miles away with it using the D710. NMO mount in the roof.

Installed a DMM ball mount and connected the the control head bracket that came with the D710 this weekend. Now the control head sits so high it blocks some of the windshield. So far I have a single short arm connection. Has someone else crossed this bridge and have a solution?

 

I thought about the DMM but wanted something lower. I'm using a Lido Seat mount. You loosen a seat bolt, put it under, and tighten it. It has a poseable shaft...the white strip is a 3/4 inch strap holding it to the center console. Could have ordered black, but these were in stock...impatient...it wiggles a little bit, but all in all, a great position for my D710.

Yeah, it covers some dials/buttons, but a simple tilt and done when you need them.

 

How long does it take to get a GPS lock being that low?

 

As far as I have seen from the D710 maybe a minute! I use it for APRS. with a tablet running APRSDroid, and it works perfectly. Here's the entire pic. With the tablet on another Lido Mount.

 

About a minute for me also, sometimes less. I'm using the same mount on the passenger side.

 

The same mount? Which? DMM or Lido? Just curious.

So 2 fellow D710 users. It's a GREAT radio! The clarity of receive, the reach or range, the features! It's been my favorite radio thus far! I can go hiking where there is zero cell reception...put the D710 on crossband repeat. My HT can't hit the repeater with 5w but the D710 with 50w can...My HT hits the truck, the Kenwood hits the repeater, and I have comms. Love this radio. I also have the Yaesu 400XDR, but nowhere near the radio the Kenwood is. The Yaesu is relegated to the base 2/70 radio. The Kenwood stays in the mobile.

 

Lido mount. Yeah I've wanted a D710G since I saw the original D700 years ago and wasn't licensed. It's been a fantastic radio. I can easily hit repeaters 40+ miles away with the

$58 comet SBB-2 146/446 mhz dual band mobile antenna 18" PL-259

comet SBB-2 antenna. Haven't had a need yet for the x-band but I'm sure I will at some time. I noticed the other day it even tells you what grid square you're in. I don't see the Kenwood ever leaving the truck. I've entertained getting one of the Kenwood NX-5300 with a DMR license just because of loving the Kenwood's so much. They make excellent radio's.

 

I've got the D710G in a lido mount on the passenger side. My tablet goes in the TPAM on a hondo garage mount.

You just introduced me to the Kenwood NX-5300 radio. I'm a digital mode guy. Have a digital hotspot talking around the world on a few different Ht's. YSF, DMR, D-Star sort of thing. Thanks.

 

By far the easiest of my radios to operate.

 

Just remember it's another license for each mode on that one. But you get a true commercial grade radio. Downfall to it being a commercial radio though is you only get one band. If only they would come out with a TH-D75a that has DMR in it. Don't see it happening though, D74a will probably be all we get in the ham line.

Hey all, bought an antenna for my lil’ Baofeng to monitor weather stations until I get my license. Will the antenna being crooked adversely affect any of the capabilities?

Shouldn't be a problem...I've slammed my Nagoyas in the truck door, and they still work fine.
