Did APRS offline update recently and move the option to locate the map source file? This weekend i went to pull up APRS from the sticks, since No Big Deal with OSM but to my frustration on both my tablet and phone i no longer have the option for Preferences>map source file>idaho. WTH?!

My first rig was a Baofeng. Put a mag mount 1/4 wave Nagoya on that radio and you'll see quite an improvement. I now run a Kenwood TM-V71a on that same antenna which is no longer a mag mount but instead screwed into a bracket coming off the 3rd brake light assy.

I feel like it must be an autoupdate? It's weird. I can't find that option now so idk if I need to uninstall and find an older version of aprsosm.

I have VHF and VHF/UHF radios, each radio has it's own dedicated roof mounted antenna.

The APK for OSM is different than what you can download from the Google Play store, so you need to side-load the APK. Instructions here, download here. Then you still need to download the offline map file.

I understand that. Ive been running that version for years. Then this weekend, the ability to choose map source file disappeared from the Preferences Menu within the App leaving me SOL with the downloaded maps. Worked fine a month ago.

If I need to go back through and re-setup APRS for OSM, then I will, but I found it odd both the phone and tablet versions of aprs have changed.

Why would you need to choose a different map than what you were using a month ago?

Seriously sounds like you didn't download the OSM APK, even though you thought you might have. I just tried it and it works fine. The option is Map File Name in the most recent version... (screenshots below)

If you did download the OSM APK, what's the URL of the APK that you installed?

I haven't adjusted settings since I setup the tablet long ago. Heck when we were in DVNP this year I was using it, and as I went from ID, to NV to CA I have to setup the map file to the state I'm in.

But then this weekend I had no map overlay like usual, so I went to pick my Idaho map, and I don't have that option any longer.

I get what you're saying but for all the years I've been running aprs I've used the offline version (not the one from the play store).

My menu runs to an end at Notifications. It must've reverted to the standard APRS on both devices?!
    Screenshot_20190616-192006.jpg

Edit: I've redownloaded the osm version and it is working again, but I am still confused as to how my osm version changed to the standard version!? Super unfun when in the bush!

All depends on amount of space you have for antennas and QTH station. Ive used computer desk, wire racks (do not use). Even just a Bar stool with counter top screwed to it. Trees are best if you can put up a Dipole.

Im going to be revamping my Home station and antennas as soon i return from Kuwait.

I had exactly what you described happen to me. The map file preference option disappeared. I remembered that the play store version didn't allow the use of offline mapes and sure enough, the version of APRSdroid installed was the latest version of the app being offered from the play store.

The fix of course was to remove it and install the OSM version.

What antennas are you running? I’m getting a good deal on a Kenwood vhf. Was looking at a 19” tram antenna.

Thank you for proving what shred of sanity I have left! very disconcerting to have happen when in areas far from service to be able to fix the issue. Luckily I had memorized the roads in the area but being sans nav was not fun. The fix is easy but annoying " verify version of aprs before leaving the garage each and every time".

Is there a way to set the app to not update?

I'd guess auto update was on.

Only way to do it is in Google play your settings in there just turn off auto update.

I've never seen a setting in the app for this. I have the tablet's OS set to not auto-update but it still happened. :notsure:

Thanks. I'll dig more as I haven't found a way to do it app specific.

Pretty sure there isn't a way to do that.

I never have auto update on. In my profession you usually want to be two versions behind. Or find a version and stick with it until some major break through and even then wait for a stable version to come out.

Google always pokes you to update stuff so even turning off auto update you can quickly update apps you want to

The problem is I like/don't mind having everything else up to date, but losing the security of being in the bush, and being able to fire up my OSM maps really bit me in the ass. We decided to change course and had no maps of the area we decided to venture into. Figured it wasn't a big deal because I had osm. Really took a lot of confidence out of it for me. Oh well. Like I said now I know it is something I need to check for before trips. Oh well. Thanks for the help. IMG_20190616_094150.jpg

Really though why didn't you have a bcn map of the area? That's what you should have had in the first place

Haha. Am I the only one to overkill this. I have APRSdroid on 3 devices I carry. The current phone which is backup to the back up. My old phone (primary for APRSdroid) and my tablet. Old phone has no sim card and only gets wifi when I switch it on. Same for tablet. Both the tablet (primary for BCN) and the old phone have BCN on them.
