That TM-V71a is the radio I want to go with but don't have $370 to drop on it plus antenna and NMO mount. I was going to settle for a much cheaper radio for the time being but may just buy a mount and antenna and see what my Baofeng can do.

I hook my Baofeng to a Comet GP-1 in my attic when I am at home and get great range. 16 miles to the furthest repeater I can hit and it/I come across clear in radio checks. Throw it inside the cabin of my truck though and I cant even bring in the closest repeater to me once I get outside 4 miles.

The truck is a giant Faraday cage. Before I had picked up the mag mount, I'd clip the radio the the window glass 3/4 of the way up with the antenna sticking out of the truck. That alone made a difference.

Yup, I can’t hit a repeater for anything with the ht in the cab so no DMR Mobile.

I’ve got a dual band mag mount I just don’t use it. Analog side of repeater is linked to DMR side so really no need locally for it. I just use analog when I’m in the truck on the 710.

for the VHF, and depending on terrain. I'll run either a Larsen (NMOQC) 1/4 wave 19" antenna, or a Larsen (NMO-150BHW) 1/2 wave antenna that's 55" or something like that. Running a Tram Dual band for the VHF/UHF.

I run the Larsen 19", so far made contact at random about 60 miles away. I went with Larsen, cuz supposedly, that's what law enforcement and emergency vehicles use, as well as our work trucks run a few of them

I never leave home without my Benchmark maps book for the state(s) I'm going to. For a paper map, they actually have a very fine level of detail for the places I go.

Only thing they don't have was a warning that going up a certain road in the west desert of Utah puts you on the Dugway Proving Ground / Bomb range and you don't know that until you hit the gate for the mainside base. At which point you have to do about a 50 mile loop to get 5 linear miles for the road home.

Oh, I'm covered on consumables. It's just the extra hour and a half to get home.

GAH! I must have been very drunk. I'm usually a stickler for "your" versus "you're". I can feel the nuns beating on me from the grave.
