So, after putting it off for quite some time, I’m ready to install a mobile unit in my truck. I’m thinking that I want to have a single din HU and then the ham interface in the space currently taken up by the factory HU. Has anyone done this? Any possible interference that I should be worried about? The main body for the radio I plan to mount behind the rear seats in the “whisky pocket”. Currently leaving towards a 710

TM-D710GA head is larger then single DIN. I don't know of any ham mobile that is exactly Single DIN.

I don't think you'll have any interference problems with the head next to the am/FM. However, it's common for the am/FM to desense when in transmit with 2m in other cars that I've owned. The OEM unit in my taco seems to be immune though.

I was thinking it would be close but wasn’t sure. I know the 8800 is close to a single din. Mostly after function, is having a tidy dash and not one screen blocking another, or controls blocked. I already have a flyseye antidark strip under the a/c controls do a mount from bird dog would not fit, for using a ram mount.

Rookie question. Are all powerpole the same, brand wise and quality? And suggestions?

No. Powerwerx are best. But expensive. I usually just buy the cheap Ebay ones and make them work...... Sometimes (rare) they don't work right and they don't always click together securely. But I just super glue them.

Don't get a cheap copy crimper tool though. They suck.

Quality crimper tools are expensive, find a friend who has one and ask him to bring it with him tomorrow. Also, don't forget the roll pin when you pair together the red and black. Finally, make sure that you follow the ARES standard so that everything can be connected to everything else.

Posting in a couple places as this has some overlap.
I finished the install of my Icom 5100a rig today. Last step was to install and set up the isolation battery charger.
When the truck is running the charger is enabled, if the voltage in the secondary battery is low, the charger charges it. The battery is a typical UPS 7.5 Ah battery that fits neatly in the space behind the rear drivers side seat compartment on a Dual Cab. This configuration always draws from the auxiliary battery, on purpose.

You can see the Icom transceiver in the mount bonded to the charging unit.

Edit: I built a bottom panel to protect the battery and wires better:

Here's the view of the head end of the transceiver previously installed in the headliner:

Okay, so I'm binging the tv show "Longmire". I quickly realize they use CB radios for county wide coverage and dismiss it as Hollywood. Move on. In Season 3 Episode 9 shortly after 36 min. Branch picks up from a gas station counter, what is presumably a scanner...It's a Baofeng or clone. I had to rewind, and laugh some more.

Anyone have any other Hollywood OOPS! in TV shows they watch?

Hello there, future ham enthusiast here. I've got my radio, my books for studying the technicians class exam. I'll pop in from time to time to say hello & pick some brains

I dont know of many hams in my area that are anywhere near my age, so finding like minded folks in a like minded community are hard to come by

www.Hamstudy.org is a good place to do the practice tests also. Quite a few on here have passed using it. It does random questions out of the test pool and if you miss one it will keep giving it to you until you’re proficient with it. Also shows how much of the test bank you’ve seen.

It’s also been upgraded with the new test bank questions as of July 1st.

Thanks medic! I haven't heard of this source before. I'm familiar with most of the nomenclature due to an electrical background for my job. Hopefully everything like formulas will start coming back to me
