Let me explain where my mind is.....

I have a HT, Baofeng 5 that uses a cable from the mic/speaker ports to the input for microphones and ear bud on my S8.......

So you're trying to use the radio to talk directly to the phone via audio levels? So you do not have a TNC (modem) in the system, such as a Mobilinkd TNC, Argent Tracker or Byonics TinyTrak.

    Not yet.

At this point, I don't have a mobile rig. Which is I am asking so many questions. Want to be sure I have walked through all the options and needs before I break open the wallet...

You don't strictly need a TNC to make APRS work using a handheld radio and a phone. You can use audio level in/out and rely on what's known as a software modem that's written into the APRS client software on the phone. It's hard to explain so Google around. Suffice to say a cable with some resistors to match levels can work.

Usually having a TNC is usually more reliable, though. You can use the TNC with any radio, it's not specific to one radio. If you want to experiment with the Baofeng at first then move it to another radio (such as TM-V71) that's possible.

If you're considering a FTM-400 then you don't need the TNC at all with the functional limitation that has been discussed.

I'm using the hardware as described in the video @DaveInDenver (@DaveinGJ) posted. The serial cable to bluetooth adapter, needed the tablet USB for charging.

That looks to be an HF antenna in the rear of the FJC.

It's over rated and a huge pain in the ass. I'd highly suggest just good portable/ mobile set up. Mobile radio, easy to deploy antenna such as a 40m efhw.

Getting the noise out of my truck has been a nightmare. Works great with the ignition off though. Haha

Anybody can put a screwdriver antenna on the back of their car. Doesn't mean they can operate.

You're doing it wrong, then. I've made 2000 Qs in a weekend in my truck. With hamsticks.

While mobile? You're an operator! I can barely juggle steering, shifting and rag chewing on a local repeater without spilling my Bud Light.

Anyone can type on a keyboard, doesn't mean they have a clue. Haha. What's your point if any?

2000 is impressive. That's 48 contacts an hr, without sleeping

The guy had a nice truck. And is clearly documented taking part in the ham community. What's your beef ?

Well, you said mobile HF is an overrated pain in the ass, so I called BS. That's my point.

It was a 20 hour contest, so over 100/hr average. The real operators do more 3000+. CW.

Yes, anybody can put photos on instagram. And they do.

Nice. Guess you've got the fellas Bio on the file.

Glad you've had success running a key in a truck while mobile getting 2000 contacts In a weekend. Must have been one fun weekend living out of your truck.

My point is you know nothing about this guy. You know squat about my set up.

You're kinda rambling with no info on anything.

Edit: so for 20 hrs straight you worked 100 stations / hr from your truck, mobile... Gotcha....
