I did, and it was easy. Bent the flange back so it was straight and square, and dabbed some solder where it needed to be.

What’s the general feel towards fellow off-roaders that use hams on the trail without a license? Frowned upon? What about only using FRS freqs? I’m waiting on a test date to open up but in the meantime, I ordered some radios to program and play around with

Yes, it’s frowned upon. As a licensed operator, I cannot knowingly carry on a conversation with an unlicensed person using the frequencies.

Plus with the cost of gmrs radios coming down, that's the way to go for folks who don't want to take a test. Can't beat it.

KF7EGL, just renewed by lic, it lapsed while I was in the sandbox. Currently have no radios, but I will end up getting a dual band portable something.

I had a hytera UHF dmr radio and a tinyshark RF NOde set up at my house before I left. it worked well. clear coms. But for where I am at now analog should be the main coms in the greater seattle wa area.

Where is the best place to operate ham radios? Looking to get more serious now that life has calmed down.

    How portable?

I am loving my Yaesu 931A, it is light and designed to be portable, just not backpack portable.

    That a 991a?

    If so..

    IMG_6046.jpg

I'm thinking more of a FT-891 portable for camping and taking to work with me. Smaller than the 991A and about half the price.

The D710G begs to differ. Now if it just did hf it would be golden.

The backpack portable gold standard would be the KX2. Really fun radio.
