There’s also the fact that the D710 TNC head isn’t available anymore to upgrade the V71a to a D710. Beside what it costs to upgrade the head you should have just bought the D710 to begin with. You’re not really saving a lot with the V71a when you have to add the TNC etc to it either other than getting the availability to run a tablet screen with it. To run a tablet with the d710 you would also have to add one of the external TNC’s but it’s not really someone I’m interested in doing since I have enough shit on the dash already. I’m fine with the data from the remote head. If I want to see it on a map I can open the free standalone APRS app on my phone.

Okay, rsp1a is an SDR. So you use the SDR for a full waterfall and the 891 for the transmit.

    Yeah here's the difference.

Also, someone on here built their own tnc as well.

Correct. And you can link them to the same com port which allows you to control your frequency on your radio just by clicking the signal.

That was me. Mobilinkd has a hacking page with firmware and schematics for their stuff. They encourage making.

Can y'all suggest an APRS mobile radio that doesn't break the bank? I was originally looking at the Anytone/RT95/UV-25x2/UV-50x2 before I thought about APRS. I know the common thought is name brand is best, buy once cry once.. but I like to experiment and tinker, and have a wider range of options. The Anytone CB(10meter) radio I picked up a while back has a fantastic formfactor, incredibly small which fits great in the overhead console temp/compass location!

I'll have to get with you on that sometime. I'd like to gave an arduino set up just to beacon.

Yeah conditions suck these past couple weeks. I haven't gotten much either. I still hear VK come in occasionally though. Canary islands have been on 17m. South America has been working 15m as usual.

Yes. Base under the seat, NMO mount through the roof, head unit on the radio bezel. You can find photos of mine on this thread.

My DIY mobilinkd is attached to the radio all the time and I have a tablet for APRS work. Makes messaging and seeing locations very easy.

I'm part way through designing and building just that. Actually changed over to the Micro Modem design and firmware because they have a nice Arduino library to work with. Also designing a weather station with the same features. I have a GPS module to get position and then beacon like a TinyTrak. Been looking for a collaborator.

Only thing around here running APRS at the moment is repeaters. As usual.

Haha right. I only use it to text people's phones when I'm in the middle of no where. Or to show a ham who are late getting to camp on how to get to the camp qth

I didn't see the cut should be at 1/4 wave. They actually work very well we have used them hauled up in trees at various events covering some distance.

Hey guys, today is a big milestone for me. I was licensed in 1983, the city chief of police and my dad were huge into ham radio and I followed in their footsteps. My father passed away over 20 years ago and I boxed up all the radio gear and placed in storage. So much has changed and it is exciting to play around with the old gear and new gear as I get into overlanding..... I even bought a Baofeng, lol. I posted a Yaesu install on my truck earlier this year and have been active a little around the Charlotte area. I threw up a inverted V and jumped on 20/40 meters to try to catch some nets.

But today is the day!!!!!!!!! Goodbye KA8WGH of 37 years, hello N4TRD!!!!!!

    Congratulations and welcome back!

I've got a pipeline into the Carolinas from NH. We'll have to work 40m sometime!
