Bingo! The crotchety old HAM that monitors the local repeater only to chide newcomers for not following some tribal etiquette point

Bunch of places I go traveling they’ll only talk to the locals. Kinda defeats the purpose of being a ham.

It's just one man's opinion. Lots and lots of people like the FTM-400. I just encourage you to test drive one before dropping the cash on it.

I went back and read your posts on that. Where did you mount your antenna? How did you bond it to your truck? The plastic bed makes bonding a little funny. I am thinking about mounting it near the tailgate latch inside the bed (next to the tail light.)

Antenna is on the rack. Rack is bonded to the body in 6 locations. Doors are bonded. Hood is bonded. Body is bonded to frame. Bed is bonded to body and frame. Skid plates are bonded to frame. Block is bonded to body and frame. And there are other areas as well.

Well, made it out of HRO in Anaheim for less than $100. Picked up the Extra Class manual and ARRL Antenna book. Thought about getting a roll up J-pole but couldn't justify it for $40.

Another thing; I'm surprised how large the head unit of the 710G is. That thing is serious business.

They didn't have a Tarheel screwdriver on hand so I couldn't buy it. Thank goodness

    *cough* distracted driving *cough*.

I don't think I'd use the HF while driving, probably just park and pull out the straight key or mic. I'd like to be able to play HF without having to setup the 40' mast every time. That really cuts down on the bonding issues too. Maybe if I get into it enough, I could play HF while on a long drive and then I'll start chasing the bonding problems. What did you do about your fuel pump and injectors? Put some chokes on the power wires?

Tyr mic has up and down scan. And selecting a band is no wise Than selecting a channel on a vehicles which doesn't have steering wheel controls.

Basically you have to drop the gas tank to get to the pump and put an LC filter in line. As for the injectors I've been experimenting with shielding with no real results.

Most tacos have this issue. You can sit with your truck off, a wire in the tree, and hear Toyota and dodges drive by

I go take my HAM test next week, and am looking to set up for mobile use. Does anyone have experience with this 2m antenna? https://antennas.alamosa.mobi/

I'm not interested in home-based use but would like a tough dependable mobile radio. It seems that 2m is the most versatile. I have also read that there is some overlap between 2m and 70cm - will a 2m antenna allow the use of 70cm as well, or is it only the other way around?

    Thanks.

I have a Kenwood D710G and have been really happy with it. It’s a dual band radio. As far as antenna’s you can get a dual band antenna. I’m running a Comet SBB2NMO on the roof.
