Friend of mine started getting into ham a little after I did. He got a Baothing, and the next thing I new he had two very nice mobiles and now he's got an HF rig as well, with a very impressive shack. He even runs the world chrono thing that shows the map of the world with more info than I will ever use. And I believe he triple certed in one day once he committed. He regularly does the POTA and sets up his rigs when he goes to Moab and Big Bend.
His wife gives him a hard time about getting on the radio and talking to other nerds about their feet and what they had for lunch.

I have a wide variety of hobbies, this is just one of them. No fun bumping down the same trails every day, gotta have variety. I like to setup some radio stuff when I get to camp and see who I can find, local or far away.

I don't like it either, but it's better then being a pirate. My wife got licensed so we can talk. She doesn't know PL from offset. Doesn't care either. I installed a commercial radio in her car so it's easy to use.

    ARRL publishes an Operators Guide.

Allowing mobile radios on FRS might solve this.

Many of the non-technical people I know that memorized the test are better ops then many technical people. Technical expertise is not a prerequisite for courteous ops.

I think using ham radios on a trail for vehicle to vehicle communication is a fine use of ham radio, only if everyone is licensed. Unlicensed use should not be tolerated by anyone, IMHO. Don't use a calling channel either. I'd suggest 146.550 or 446.100.

@Sandman614 Keep listening to the radio. You eventually find a group you click with. There WAS a stand-alone repeater in town. Everyone came by and talked there. People from out of town even knew of it. Then the owners of the tower didnt like few of the people that were hanging out on the machine. So they shut it down. Everyone went their separate ways, some even separated themselves from everyone and created a Club. The club no longer exists, it ate its self internally.

Keep the radio on every time your near... There is a local group of old-timers that hang out from 1630 to 1700 during the weekdays. I joke with all of them cause only 1 of the 10 is a General class....

@joshuajayg Sweet pic Mo gas NICE...

Someone (maybe me) needs to just publish a "ham for 4x4ers" course that gives you just the info you need to courteously and safely chat on 2m. The pitch for ham is always "you can talk to people a million miles away and build your own antennas" or whatever but a lot of people are just looking for a reliable means of chatting with their group in terrain where GMRS/FRS are unsuitable. They don't give a shit about HF or putting up a yagi in their backyard. There needs to be just a half-day course that teaches you how not to tread on repeaters or calling frequencies by reading a band plan and dos/don'ts around that.

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but there are several offroad ham groups on the book of faces.

No I know, I just wish there was a more structured course or something available. It's hard to convince my unlicensed friends to get their certs when all of the intro to ham courses just market it as "you can talk to some guy in Australia with a vacuum tube and a coat hanger duct taped to a tree".

I think the United States actually has the lowest barrier to entry of any G7 country. The rules are set by the ITU (international telecommunications union) in terms of the syllabus, and it's oriented around the prevention of harmful interference. The principle is that if people have a good theoretical foundation, they are less likely to cause harmful interference.

You may wish to pursue increased power levels in unlicensed bands, if that's the true issue. Write to your FCC and tell them how GMRS does not meet your off-roading needs.

Isn't it brilliant .org or skillshare or something that sponsors you tube videos where you can take courses made by people? Sounds like a cool project, you should learn up and create something like that!

I think at least a series of blog posts on the subject is something I'll pursue for sure. Seems like a gap, and most of the study materials online are pretty awful from a design/usability standpoint. Ham skews old and the websites about it reflect that for sure! Worth mentioning I'm in Canada so a lot of my complaints are about how much higher the barrier to entry is here. If it was just a 35 question exam like the US I think we'd see a lot more (legal) adoption by the offroad community. Right now I know of lots of people who just go "oh that's too hard" and buy a $50 baofeng to start chatting without any regard for norms.

I wrote the Canadian basic and advanced exams last year. I think the question bank needs some love. I'm an EE and some of the terminology and block diagrams make my head hurt.

It is hard to understand how I could pass both exams without being asked to do a calculation relating frequency and wavelength, for example.

Good idea. @angerbot there's clearly some intersectional interest, and as you say some YouTube/vlog tutorials that would target a younger side of the intersections for the hobbies might help to spread interest and through that use. If you do it, let us know and good luck.

When did you write? I believe it got updated last October, there's lots of questions about frequency calculations based on wavelength or the other way around these days. Agreed on the terminology being confusing!

Actually all the stuff I really needed to learn was not on the test. Programming my radio and making a good wire antenna. I learned all that on YouTube lol!
