That is a very complex radio It is multi band. It will TX on all HF bands, 2 meters and 70 CM It also is SSB CW and FM/AM TX/RX For $1500 you better have a need for it.

To use most of the features of that radio you'll need a General class license to use them all you'll need a Extra class.

As stated before, be sure to study up for the General class exam as well. You will need your general license to use most of the HF frequencies on these type of radios including the IC-7000. I used www.hamtestonline.com to study. it was a few bucks, but i studied for a couple days off and on for a few hours each time and passed my tech and general at the same time. then using the same website I studied for about 8 hours the day before the exam and aced my Extra test. Granted I am an Electronics Engineer.. :)

Once you get to 6M and below in frequency the range is far more dependent on atmospheric conditions. Communication is no longer good with line of sight and better with skip over hundreds to thousands of miles.

Thanks! I was actually on that website thumbing through some questions to see what it was about. Seems pretty easy and straight forward. Im an A and P and we are required to have a basic electronics knowledge, which seems to be the case for the operators license as well.

A lot of the tech stuff is common sense / basic safety stuff. Once you get into the general class exam there is some basic electronics, but more of frequency usage, FCC rules, and radio theory stuff. The online thing i sent you is a very basic repetition study method. If you miss a question then it asks you that question again and again at later times til you get it right every time. Only flaw is that if you completely guess, but guess right. It might not ask the question again.
