Check your antenna ground, that's what will majorly affect your SWR. Grab a multimeter and ensure your mount is well grounded.

I don't think that D-ring is tied to the frame. Also does that mount hole have bare metal exposed?

Do a search for the local HAM club and see what they offer, this is how I found the local Richmond ones. Also, ARRL may have them listed as well.

the d rind is not attached to the frame but it is grounded by that fat silver grounding wire.

It's not grounded then. You need to get that mount grounded to the frame.

    Lots...
The fact that you have a grounding wire, doesn't mean that it's grounded. You need to connect that "fat silver grounding wire" to the frame or something that is grounded.

Find a CB/Radio shop, they usually charge a few bucks to put an SWR meter on and tune it. They can also tell you if it's grounded or not. Also, jump into the AZ BS thread, there are several guy in Tucson and one of them may have a SWR meter that can do it for a beer.

    Yes.
It's been said, but I'll say it again. With the plastic bed our trucks have. The "Ground" in your setup here consists of the shield on the coax. And about 4" of braided wire. To dramatically improve this, run another copper braid from the other side of that d-ring down to the frame. While you're at it ground both fenders to the frame, the cab, tailgate, doors, and hood.

I promise you're radio will thank me. :)
