I think if I do anything, I'll get a detachable front plate and hide the unit under the seat. Since I'm mostly an HF guy and not much into VHF I'm not in a big hurry. Antenna is my biggest concern if I do decide to put in a VHF/UHF antenna on it.

I'm installing my Kenwood TM-D710G w/ a detachable plate in my 2015 Tacoma. For now I'm mounting the radio under the passenger-side seat and the face plate will end up where the forward sunglass holder is. I just got the power run from the battery and have a Diamond antenna that is mounted on my Yakima roof rack. I'll post some pictures once I get the faceplate mounted.

Good, I'd like to see the finished result. Sounds sort of what I envisioned I'd do actually. I don't have a roof rack though.

That's awesome! Looks like you did some contesting with it. I didn't bother this year. I'm more of a CW and RTTY contester. SSB makes my ears bleed :)

What were you running for power? It looks like 20 meters was a hot band this weekend. I did spin the dial earlier today and 10 meters seemed open for a little bit this afternoon.

I did not realize that the faceplate coul be so separate from th radio. Do try to take some pics of how you route the wire for this.

    Thanks!

Okay I think I've scanned the threads enough to ask this question, installed a Kenwood TM-281. Antenna has not arrived yet, but that is my connundrum, how do you get the antenna feed from outside in? Since it's going to be a permanent mount curious what method works for getting the antenna run into the cab from outside? Also for 2m, which mounts do most people prefer if running a shell? I've seen front hood/quarter panels, and rear bumper. This is going to be a permanent installation.

If you're mounting the antenna on the hood there is a boot on the drivers side you can poke it through.
There is also a plug I brought mine in through between the bed and the cab on the drivers side.

There are rubber grommets under the cab in several places, I used one that is under the back seat, just poked an awl through it and fed the cable through, then a little dab of silicone. As far as antenna options, there will probably be several preferences, just do a little research on what guys have done on here, then go with what seems like a good fit for you. I have a lip mount on my hood with a uhf connector, I can run a decent antenna around town, but when I go in the woods I switch it to a small rubber antenna.

Greetings, first time posting in this thread. I've been licensed for 14 years and prefer HF (40m) but also use vhf/uhf.. I finally got my Icom 2730a installed.. I am using an old Larsen NMO 150 until a new NMO 2/70 gets here from HRO, along with the programming software/cable.. Now to figure out where to install the Icom IC 7000. I will probably use another Lido mount like I did with the 2/440 head unit. As far as an HF antenna goes, I am still undecided.. I will just use ham sticks to get on the air for now and decide which screwdriver I want down the road..

I am looking into the Hi-Q, Tarheel, Scorpion, etc. for screwdriver antenna's. Opinions & suggestions would be appreciated. 73, J.

Has anyone used this mount? If it replaces the factory gps/sat antenna on the roof, I may try it..

Interesting mount... $123 naa id just drill a hold in roof like i did. I did use the Sat radio antenna hole at one time. Now it leaks even after replacing with sat antenna, never sat completely flush ever again... Think im just gona remove the Sat antenna and cover with clear bra material..

Yep, if I didn't have a sunroof, I'd just drill a hole like all my other trucks:)

My research has me leaning to a Scorpion antenna, when I can find the money. The performance is top notch and they look better than the others, IMO.

    Yes.
The only other antenna I'd highly recommend you look at is the Hi-Q. rather than tapping the outside of the coil, by moving the coil up and down inside a tube with "wipers" The Hi-Q has a roller tap inside the coil that rolls up and down. Mechanically this is superior. The Hi-Q is a top notch mobile HF antenna.
