Amazon Dot (or Alexa) - got one?

If you don't know the Amazon Dot and Alexa are internet connected devices you put in your home. You talk to it and can ask questions (weather forecast, traffic, where the hell is @kuffer14, etc.), which it looks up and tells you the answer, it also can control smart appliances like lights ("Alexa, dim the living room lights"). Kind of like a home version of Siri.

Anyway, I got one for Christmas and did a little research. Turns out it is always on and listening. Apparently it does not record until you use the wake-up word: Alexa. It stores everything after that, presumably to "learn" your voice and preferences, on the Amazon servers.

I have to say that bugs me and I'm hesitating plugging it in and using it. Do any of you guys have one or know someone who does?

No, don't have one, don't need one, don't want one. As to them always listening, check the story below. They don't just record on-board, they also may store information in off-site servers.

I have one, we keep it in the kitchen dining room area. We use it for timers or to stream Spotify while I cook. Also nice to get the the forecast and such as I get ready.

the sound is actually pretty good, I wasn't sure when we got it but I've been pleasantly surprised. Sometimes we move it downstairs while we shoot pool so we can just tell I what to play and not have to mess with remotes or phones

 

This is obviously all I had to contribute. But I'll stick with Google Home. I don't want my kid ordering sex toys.
