    Storm systems race acorss the Pacific at sea level. Then, suddenly, they hit a huge pile of rocks several thousand feet high that they weren't expecting. The clouds are all like, "whoa, holy shit" and dump everything they have in a distance of a few miles. Then all the water flows from the top of the island (a few thousand feet, depending on island) to the shore in a linear distance of several miles.

    460 inches a year at the top of Kauai.
