I work with engineers all day. They have to write reports, sell their projects, write proposals, create, practice, and present presentations at interviews to win those projects, and explain to funders and customers why they should use or buy their products or services. And if they are good, write peer articles and present at conferences.

This is a big kick in the nads to many engineers after they leave college and get in the real world. Wut, no, why can't I just use my calculator or Excel?

The work you do is ultimately to help another human solve a problem or meet a need, not just and end unto itself. It is a part of commerce. Communication is very important. I know I sound all soap-boxy, but seriously, this can be the difference between those who excel and those who hit a ceiling in their careers. I can't tell you how many times I hear "we can't put him/her in front of the client," or "he/she can't write."

 

I think speech is a very valuable skill.

No, I know, some people just can't do it, and don't even get me started on how half the people in college were even allowed to graduate from HS. My point is, it should not be undervalued as a professional or life skill.
Some of the dumbest people I have ever supervised had PhDs. They cannot follow simple instructions, or they prefer to argue about them.

Nothing's wrong with Excel. It's a great tool. But some people live in, and can only think in, Excel, and they can't use their words. They'll stick a hundred pages of data in front of a customer. And the customer is like, dude, WTF? What's the answer? do I need to build the pump station or not?
