ADAM. HELP. I'm kinda fukt, might need some IT ninja skill help. Maybe you can offer some insight.

Got a 651 error on my home internet connection, ATT can't make it go away and said it isn't on their end, but will be happy to extort lots of money from me for a year to possibly provide additional help. I told them to suck my balls.

Scenario: connection was working fine forever, then one morning, it just would not connect (PPPOE). DSL cable modem seems to be working fine, normal light activity, I've reset it a few times. Wireless router seems to be talking to the modem fine, too (my machine is Admin and cabled to the wireless). Running Windows 7 Pro, and apparently this error is somewhat common, and MS doesn't seem to offer any clear fix for it. I've read several online articles, all with confusing, or apparently unhelpful advice. This ranges from renaming the raspppoe.sys to turning off virtual PC 2007, which seems to be simple and apparently works, but I could not find this to turn off.

Before I face hours of troubleshooting with no connectivity tonight at home, can you offer any sage advice? :notsure:

I found a link to an answer that deals with the rasppp0e.sys file. I feel that you shouldn't get this error ever because you need to change how your home network setup is. It sounds like your PC is doing the pppoe connection. I never setup a network this way. I always have a router/firewall do the pppoe connection. If your PC is doing the connection, that puts your computer directly on the internet with no buffer. That is a very good way to get viruses/spyware.

It sounds like you have a wireless router. what brand/model is it? I can help you get it configured correctly to do the pppoe connection.

    Hmmm.
Here is the connection: ADSL Speedstream 5360 modem (old, but always works fine)> Netgear Wireless G WGR614 v9 (don't have settings available right now, at work)> PC. Running Sophos AV.

edit: we did add the wireless router after the original setup, and I don't recall making any major changes in the broadband connection at that time, but that was a couple years ago.

edit: and thanks for trying to help.

when you installed the router did you make any changes to the way you connect to the internet on your pc?

If you go to netgear and download the user guide
Page 21 is the settings that need to be setup for the firewall do do the PPPoE authentication

I can't recall, Adam. In fact, I think my wife set it up. But again, this happened long before the current issue.

OK, thanks, printing user guide now. Feeling Amish.
