    265 is the width

    the second number is the aspect ratio. height of the sidewall in percentage of the width

    third is the rim size

    Ex. 265 width / 25.4= 10.4" wide

    265x 70%= 185.5mm / 25.4= 7.3" sidewall height x 2 sidewalls= 14.6

    14.6" of sidewall plus rim height. so 16" rim + 14.6"= 30.6"
    14.6" of sidwall plus rim 17" rim + 14.6" = 31.6"

    so the op's tires (265/70R16) is a 30.5" tire. (stock 6lug size tires)
