I had an idea that I thought was pretty good but I hadn't seen anyone else do. Hopefully it works out well and there isn't a reason that it hasn't been done before.

I have always kept a few tools in my truck just in case. A few years ago I rolled my truck and learned how important it is to have everything in the interior tired down. Getting pelted by the stuff that you tossed in the back seat sucks. After that I have always kept my tool bag behind the seat of my new truck. That has worked but I didn't like the how much of that space it was using.

Then I came up with the idea of mounting an ammo can under my hood on the three studs on the passenger wheel well. I used a Fat 50 can. It is really tight and a normal 50 cal can would probably work better. I do plan on painting the can white or black but I ran out of time today.KIMG1721.jpg KIMG1722.jpg KIMG1723.jpg

Nice, Now don’t forget and make a post in a week or so asking about a front end rattling noise.

Lol, if you look I cut the handle off the can and the tools are in a bag. If it does make noise than that thing will come right out!

I had a 76 CJ5 jeep with a soft top and did something similar for security reasons. It worked good.

It's been a long, long time since I've seen this mod. My grandad kept a red craftsman tool box in his old cars. The last one I saw that in was in his 79 bronco, it rode happily between the block and wheel well. That box got moved to a dusty shelf in the garage sometime in the mid 90s. Partially because newer cars didn't have acres of engine bay anymore, but mostly I suspect it was because if it was fuel injected or had a circuit board, he wasn't interested in messing with it.

    Thanks for the nostalgia.

Well shit. I should wish I had that big empty spot under my hood.

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
Exactly. Good idea, but if I had that space there I'd put a 2nd battery and not a storage can.

What size are those studs? I want to do exactly this, and I will admit to being lazy as hell and not wanting to go out to the truck with my loose hardware bucket and try for a win with random nuts.

You should have kept the Jeep, the CJ-5/7 are worth more than any Tacoma now.
I saw a CJ-7 (friends) that had a 20mm can in the back.

I've seen people put pelican cases in there. Personally, I want to do that in the near future. Just keeping an eye out locally for cheap 2nd hand ones haha.
This is a great idea, but I feel the metal would maybe create rattling noises in time

I like this idea! I have an unused Harbor Freight plastic ammo box sitting around. Maybe I'll see if it fits in there. 63135_W26.jpg

Why not a truck bed tool box?

your idea does seem creative though, kudos!

Actually thinking of it, it could come in handy if you carry a gun. When I got my LTC here in Texas, my instructor told me the best place if you ever decide to drink, and happen to be carrying, is under the hood. Of course ideally leave it at home if you drink. Even if you're being responsible you never know. Sometimes spur of the moment drinks happen haha. But worse case scenario no wants to be in, and you do get pulled over, it'll be less charges haha

I have a 3rd gen, but I recently put one of these in the same spot for jumper cables.

My Tacoma is 2012 with the pita Air injection pump there. I didn’t realize other Tacoma’s just had wide open space there- is that the case??

Well, after a while of it being there I have not noticed any noise or problems. So far I like it!
