Let me Clarify... The wife's do not work when packed with ice due to the same fact that its hard to steer when you have fender wells packs with ice from the interstate in the winter. you gotta kick the big clumps of ice off. the fail safe on AMP steps is that is there is resistance they stay up or Stay down. Makes it nice to wash the Jeep, open the door, step drops, hold your foot on it and close the door. It will stay down to use it to stand on to wash. They have never broken.

The only ones I have personally known to break are the ones where people wheel hard on rocks and ruts and bend the shit out of them. They are $1,000 and a nice option but they are not by any means indestructible. They work great for her. She can go to work in her dress and heals and get in and out easy.

I thought they are a cool idea, until I found out how terrible they are if you live in a colder climate and have snow lol.

Beside they do not actually protect anything. Better off with sliders.

...sump pumps are motors...they are completely sealed.
Considering I hook them up constantly I've seen tones of submersible motors. They can be fully sealed from the elements. Ever see a motor that's meant to go in a class 0 hazardous location?

Ok and what would a small motor like that cost? This has a small transmission built onto it as well. Truthfully I see that being more of an issue then the motor it's self.

I have already seen to people rip the step off their step bars. Shit happens those are not made for heavy off road uses either.

    BUT SLIDERS.

    BECAUSE SLIDERS.

    /fapfapfapfap

You don't need steps if you're 4'11 with a 6" lift, just get sliders! Sliders FTW.

    Ughhhhhhhhhhh. :bananadead:

    Learn something new every day.

But maybe they are just priced in such a way it's not economically worth it.

But all bs a side. These board are made very well.

I had them on my Titan. I never had an issue with them breaking or failing to open or close, and I used my truck pretty good. But, I do live in SoCal, and parked it in my garage...So they never froze overnight outside. They did tuck up much more on the Titan an they do on a Tacoma. IMG_0241.jpg

Every farmer I know that has bought power steps has broke them within a year. That being said, with good care and maintenance in an on road application, they might hold up better.

Farmers are hard on their trucks. They use the shit out of it. A year is probably good.

Farm trucks are a good measure of how something will work for someone over a 3-5 year ownership period. Call it accelerated wear. If it fails in a year, don't depend on it to last more than 3 on your truck. For the cost the power boards should be lasting longer than that. My humble opinion of course.

well to put it into context the only time I found out a price of something was the recent job I was on. It was installing two sump pumps at the bottom of a forced water main shaft in a 3mx 3m x1m pit. Two pumps one for high level one for low. Each pump was a 600V 15hp 3 phase pump. fully submersible, thermo overload and seal sensors. Class I Zone 0 Haz-Loc rated. Each one was $15 000, floats were each 1500 and the control unit for the two pumps was $80 000.

Now mind you, all of this was hazardous location rated, and rated for the worst class.
That being said these were obviously very specialty type motors. Anything thats Haz-Loc rated is insanely priced. A fuckin light switch box is 750. a 8x8 junction box is 2000. The fittings alone are at least $80+ a fitting.

But still a fully sealed unit might be a bit expensive. I only deal with 208V or higher so no clue what a 12v motor would cost lol. But regardless it can be made. Like you said though probably not economically reasonable.

...does it even get below freezing in SoCal.

just the way you worded that the "it never froze overnight outside" made it sound like it does go below freezing.
Here in Jan/Feb its never warmer than -20C and -40C at night and during the day with wind. So ya, these would not survive.

It's not the temperatures that kill them. It's water ingression plus the freezing temperatures that kills them.
