Thx, but it’s too much to wade thru. I was hoping there would be someone with a 2000 that’s done this before

Have you ever installed a car stereo system before? It's not something you can really learn from a 5 minute YouTube video. If you want to learn to do this yourself, it would be worth your time to do some research and read through some threads.

Yes, I’ve replaced many a stock stereo with an aftermarket. What I was hoping to find was info specific to my model year so I had a better idea of places to mount an amp and tweeters.

My amp is mounted under my passenger seat, and with the 2004 I have tweeter mounts on my door panels.

The door panels on the 2000 don't have a place to mount tweeters, so the easiest option is going to be getting some 4Runner door pods. You can get a set on eBay for $25-30. You'll have to run your tweeter wires through the wire bundle that is visible when you open the door.

Here's a pic of my amp positioning. I use the rear left passenger seat bolt to ground the amp to the body. The power wire is run from battery, through the firewall grommet, under the driver's side scuff plate, under the carpet towards the center console and then out the other side. The subwoofer out line just goes down the center console.

I have, its pretty much the same for all 1st gens, my tweeters are on the doors on the fabric as far up and forward as I could. I got the crossovers to go onto the back of the plastic pieces that hold the woofers on the doors. The amp is under the passenger side seat. Not really anything different for 2000

    Amp: under seat

Tweeters: cleanest OEM install would to buy 4Runner sail panels with the tweeters covers built in.

Subwoofer: for my 98 I just integrated an 8” under seat powered sub. Doesn’t rattle teeth but fills out the low end nicely.

Most speakers come with surface mount tweeter pods that mount super easy to the stock sail panel and look fine, that's how I did it and I'm happy with how it came out. Especially important if the tweeter won't fit in the 4runner sail panel.

I got tweeters to fit in the factory location in the door panel with a back strap and some foam tape. No pics, but here to tell you it's possible. They just need to be small enough.

The problem is 2000 and earlier interiors never came with factory tweeters, so you usually have to surface mount them or use the 4Runner sail panels.

Gotcha. In that case, the sail panels seem like a much safer bet than trying to go flush mount.

Installed a 500W amp under my seat, and threw a 10 in the back. I had a huge amount of trouble finding a good ground. Some of the seat bolts were very strange. That’s the only notable thing tho. We installed in a few basic steps(you’ll have to know the techniques to do this already)
    1. Replace your radio. I recommend a AVH-211EX Pioneer Unit. It slides in perfectly assuming you have a double din stick radio. You can look up vids on how to do this, takes about 2hrs
    2. While replacing radio, hook up your amp cables to your new radio. Make sure it works before putting it back in
    3. Install the amp. Use the remote power in your wiring harness(get one that works with your amp and radio ofc). I screwed mine in underneath my driver seat.
    4. I made a sub box myself and just let it sit in my back seat(I have an xtracab). It’s only 10 by 8 but is plenty for a small cab. With outdoor carpet it won’t slide anywhere.
I had a friend help me who had experience doing this. I suggest you do the same. It can get frustrating when you don’t know what to do and you’re sitting there looking at your dash completely ripped apart.
Edit: forgot to mention speakers. You have to replace them. An aftermarket radio will completely overpower them. If you’re on a budget getting away with replacing only your front ones is easy and it sounds really good. Memphis makes some quality ones that fit your original holes, sort of. Mine stick out slightly because of their depth but it’s not a problem since my door panel covers the speaker. I don’t have tweeters for mine since I have manual mirrors. I’m sure you can put them in some other place tho

John how did you mount the sub box?

Funny enough, i used to run 2 of those 10s in my 86 toyota pickup. Well the precursors to that model as it was years ago..but still. They sound good. Not huge ball tickly bass but still nice.

The alpine type X's I have in the other truck, now thats just stupid crazy. But I was in High school back then...

    Cool sort of figured.

haha yes no doubt. Im thinking just an 8'' will be good for a single cab.
