Well think of this, the center cluster gives you gps locations, it tells you turn by turn directions, it tells you the speed limits of the road your on. All of these things are coming from the radios GPS system.

Realistically we’re both guessing at this point. I just can’t imagine why you would need a calibrator to fix that digital speedo with a tire size change if the feed was GPS based though. I hope someone actually knows the answer though as I’m very interested.

The calibration does the clusters speedo, not the one in the center of the dash. Also, the speed limit signs that appear in the cluster will have a red boarder on them if your speeding(if your right on the edge, the cluster can say your speeding, but the sign wont light up red, showing its getting its speed from the gps). I thought that was kinda neat feature.

I am guessing on this, but all signs are pointing to it being right.

    Lets do a test.

I need someone who still has their factory headunit installed. I need you to remove it, unplug the GPS antenna (its the white square shaped plug on the right side).
Then reinstall the radio and go for a drive. Check to see if the cluster has a mph showing in the center.

If its gone, or stuck at zero, then we know 100% the center cluster mph comes from the radio.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Just going off the wiring diagrams, the cluster is fed only one speed signal. The one from the skid control ECU. No GPS speed.

plus at work, I can confirm without a GPS antenna installed (defective antenna came in once...) the center digital speed was still working

the speed signal from the skid control is also fed to the radio, this is what disables settings while driving. GPS speed isn’t utilised for anything really. (But I believe can be seen in the diag menus of the radio)

I have an SR with an aftermarket head unit. I have the digital display as well. So two things point to it not being from the GPS (3 actually). 1. Aftermarket head unit and I still have the display. 2. The SR has no GPS antenna. It just doesn't exist. 3. Display still works in tunnels...

I don’t think you are understanding how the canbus system feeds data throughout the vehicle. There is no doubt that the GPS “panel” on the MFD is getting its data from the radio. That doesn’t mean that the speedometer panel is acquiring its speed signal from the radio as well. In fact, I bet that if you pull the SD card from your radio you lose the speed info on the GPS panel but don’t lose the digital speedo.

Lastly, I’m almost certain that the calibrator does both the digital speedo as well as the cluster (that is because they get their signal from the same place). It looks like the posters above also confirmed that the digital speedo does not get its feed from the GPS.

@caribe makaira likely knows the answer to this question. @OVTune probably does as well.

    No worries.

My analog watch and digital watch don't match. I only doubt the correct time when I'm wearing both watches.

So, I only wear one at a time. Now, I'm sure of the time.

Might be a lesson in here..........
