I know all the basics and common comparisons. I've been doing a lot of research on tires - skinny vs wide, larger diameters, load ratings...etc and I need to just pick a damn tire already! But, I'm over-thinking this. I keep getting hung up when figuring the best compromise for my situation and hoping for some insights specific to my situation.
    • New to me 2010 DCLB. Has big wheels/tires that I want to replace with something more modest but still a good AT tire.
    • My old truck (99 F150 rwd) has Falken Wildpeaks and although I haven't done any offroading I'm otherwise very impressed with how these have performed. They are not E rated but in hindsight I probably should have gone with E as I've put at least 2k lbs in the bed and I think was pushing the max weight on that spec.
    • I'd like to keep weight down where it makes sense to do so.
    • I'd like to keep a good level of comfort, where I can, but this is not hugely important. The tires on it now are LT285-70-17 Toyo R/T's so most any AT tire should be an improvement.
    • I'd like to keep cost down, but willing to "pay once, cry once" as they say.
    • Most common use will be on road, around town for hauling. Sometimes just a few hundred lbs of car parts, sometimes 1500-2000lb of soil, lumber... This is a weekend "utility" vehicle for me, not a daily driver.
    • Most mileage will be for road / camping trips throughout California.
    • Hoping to get some offroading (while camping) up in the mountains. Also hoping to see snow in the winter for snowboarding trips. Unlikely I'll be doing any serious off roading, crawling...etc (but who knows, maybe I'll get sucked in).
    • I've pretty much narrowed the search down to Wildpeak A/T3W and Scorpion AT+ but they have different weights and ratings available which is complicating my decision.

    Here's the data I've compiled:

    1. Should I opt for SL tires to save some weight? If so, I'd probably go with the Wildpeak (2nd on list above) as I'm familiar with them, they have great reviews, I think they look better and they are cheaper.
    2. Should I opt for E tires for added durability and weight rating? If so, I'd go with the Scorpions (4th on list above).
    3. Left field option - Could I get away with a 235 on my 7.5" wheels? I could save a little weight over the wider E rated tires and only sacrifice weight rating I wouldn't have needed anyway. This would also allow me to run the Wildpeak which is a bit more of a known quantity. I don't have any problem with how skinny tires look, actually I kinda prefer skinny vs fat.

Any thoughts to push me in one direction or the other? I'm guessing all 3 would be just fine and that I'm just splitting hairs here - but that's what I do, this damn OCD and analysis paralysis!

For your uses the Wildpeak in SL form will be perfect. Just rugged enough but very road friendly and does well on wet pavement and snow. I've used the SL and the LTs.
