Guessing with those rear frame skirts they're trying to hide that it doesn't have leaf springs. In the other shot you can also see the rear lower control arm.

Edit: could be a leaf spring, kinda too blurry to really tell. but I can't see the rear portion if it is a leaf

Edit Edit: Definitely a lower control arm. If it was a leaf, it looks like it would be under the axle. Which is highly unlikely

Could be. It is funny that they are covering them now but didn't in the older pics.

Of course, the 4Runner already has coils.

    Getting interesting. Haha!

I agree, but overall, they didn't make it into a baby Tundra, thankfully!

It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it still looks like the frame rails sit an inch or two lower than the 3rd gen. And the bedrails still sit an inch or two higher.

The belt line is now literally above the nipples.

IDK. The doors still look like the carry overs from the 2nd Gen. From there, the frame exposure looks about the same and the bed rails align with the bottom of the windows.

The patent pics don't show anything in the frame / driveline region.

I flip flop on it back and forth, convincing myself it's lower then it telling myself it's the same.

On the stock 3rd gen set at stock suspension height, the frame rails line up with the top of the hub face, or between the hub and the lugs even. On most spy shots the frame rails line up with the hub center. Some shots in this new set have the rails a little higher than center, but still not as high as the 3rd gen.

Admittedly the older photos were even more misleading because the rockers completely covered the frame.

But I strongly suspect that the lower ride is a compromise to gain a taller cab (more headroom means there's freedom to make a deeper footwell)

Sure hope I'm wrong. The whole point and history of the Tacoma was to be a small but high-clearance truck. That amount of sunshine poking out from under the chassis was the exact reason why, way back in the year 2000, I parked my Nissan crew cab next to a stock Tacoma and felt ashamed.

Oh! The actual spy shots have me scratching my head about that also. Still going back to my ACSB / 4Runner mule theory, they could be running all different combos of ballast and such to test the layout, powertrain, and stability systems. That would cause the ride height to be all over the place.

I agree though. The high clearance with the cozy cab works for me. It certainly doesn't need to get any larger. Haha!

    For fun there:

Unfortunately, no Taco or HiLux yet, but comparing the Chevy with other stuff is quite the laugh.

Toyota already put up a patent on one of their renderings.

Meh......Looks nice but not I have to hurry up and trade in my 3rd gen nice. All about the powertrain to me. If they turbocharged a lawn mower engine to eek out another 3 mpg I'll be keeping my V6.

I'm too happy with mine also. But at least, it doesn't look like the Tundra.

Well if they do away with rear leaf springs then why not tuck those wheels up toward the frame. Got to chase those MPG.
