Lets say your vehicle is worth $5,000 to the insurance company. They are going to give you $5,000 and you sign the title over to them and they sell the vehicle for what they can at salvage.

But you want to keep your truck and fix it yourself. The insurance company gave you a $5,000 evaluation that included lets say $1,500 salvage value they thought they would get back for the vehicle. So if you want to keep the vehicle you will get $3,500. $5,000 minus the $1,500 salvage value.

The vast majority of the time it's not worth doing that. The poster who posted the buy back basically did all that work to sell the vehicle for the same money insurance would have gave him. So that doesn't make sense to me.

It also can have insurance implications. For example some states will require a salvage title for the vehicle. Also lets say your insurance company was who totaled out the vehicle. In some cases they won't allow you to carry collision or comp on the vehicle anymore since they already totaled it out. So why would they insure a vehicle and pay you for repairs for a vehicle they already gave you the entire value for? So that's something to consider and something to always ask about.

I think just the paint and replacing the panels will total the truck. Whatever is lurking under the panels and frame will more than total the Taco.

They are going to total it, also they are going to sell your truck for about 4 thousand dollars.

Before the insurance company tries to take you for a ride (they are going to trust me) start getting comparables right now ready to send to them, additionally once they say they are going to total it take everything you possibly can off the truck that you can sell to help recoup for loss. As long as it rolls onto the flat bed/tow truck they wont care. Seriously, if you can take your engine and transmission, do it.

So sorry for your loss and equally happy to hear no one was physically hurt!
The frame does look to be wacked pretty good but maybe in the right hands could be fixed!
I think it would be a mistake to restore it, you would never be satisfied!!!!
I would look for a low milaged 2nd gen and jump on it!!!
    Check out "Bring a Trailer"!!!!
Your truck is awaiting you :)
    Best of luck to you!!
