First off, I have a 2016 TRD Sport 4x4 DCSB Super White. I absolutely love everything they have done to this truck. Even the ginomo grill which I will be painting black or replacing with some aftermarket parts. The truck drives like my 14 Tundra did. It is very well refined.

It does feel a bit more peppy than the 4.0 liter. The transmission around town is fantastic. When it's on the highway though, it shifts from 6th to 4th on moderate inclines going around 75mph. It toggles between 6th to 5th on light inclines. Does anyone else find this annoying? I have owned a 2001 and a 2008 taco but both were stick. Is this normal? Please note, I'm coming from a 2014 WRX with over 300 horseys. I'm not even trying to accelerate. Just maintaining speed.

I was trying to wait for a 6 speed manual DCSB Off Road but the wait was killing me and wouldn't mind an auto for stop and go up the hill to work in the AM. I'm getting around 19.5 mpg mixed with a 1/4 of my 1st tank left. It's not bad for a new engine. I just feel like it's straining when it jumps from 2k rpm to 4500.

I remember reading a post a few weeks ago about the gear ratios on the new 6spd auto and how the last 2 gears were both overdrive gears. Also, I believe the Atkinson cycle is more efficient at lower RPMs. So they probably geared and programmed the shifts to keep it cruising at lower RPMs most of the time for fuel efficiency, but since the engine generates more power at the higher RPMs, it isn't surprising that it would downshift a bit to get it when it needs it.

If I recall correctly, the gearing on the 6 spd manual is different and would result at significantly higher rpm than the auto at the same speed when you get into 5th and 6th. Which would probably reduce the amount of shifting needed, but probably results in the slightly lower fuel efficiency of the manual.

It's very eager to shift. It pushes to go faster. The ECT power button has been off all weekend. I turned it on this morning on the way up to work and it just exagerated the hang on the downshift rev. It's definitely never stubborn to down shift. Also never hunting. I love the transmission. Just feels too eager.

You sure its dropping gears? probably kicking TCC off on light inclines and tcc off and drop to 5th on bigger ones

I read that a few other guys complained about that also. I would hate that myself. I like the way my '14 V6 Taco stays in 5th on the highway 99% of the time, just like my old '03 Silverado did(4th gear). Problem is most of these "new-fangled" auto's tend to upshift/downshift more in order to squeeze a bit more mpg's....

One reason i decided against the GM twins. The shift programming is horrendous

I kinda think that these newer trannys are trying to be so efficient nowadays that they're making them work like a CVT. I test drove a 15 corolla for kicks and that trans can suck it. Merging onto the freeways and slight inclines rev the crap out of those engines.

Manual shifts work to a point. I tried that too. It helped stay in 5th til it makes up it's own mind about dropping to 4th. I can predict the drop to 5th and even 4th now. 5th has plenty of power to make it over the inclines but it wants to drop to 4th. It will drop itself into 4th even if you have manually selected 5th.

hopefully someone will come out with a programmer for these trucks once they've been out. Dual injection and VVT and 6-speed leaves lots of performance on the table.

I love the aftermarket tuning capability my GM car offers. Run a mild-ish tune on the street and a neck snapping, fuel guzzling, tune on the track.

GM is the same way . Once a car has been flashed, you can't revert.
