Well, ladies and gents, I'm here at the Toyota dealership with a seized brake caliper. While here I asked them to check the frame. Sure enough, it failed with flying colors. They didn't deem it unsafe, however.

The service rep is confident Toyota will replace the frame. I, on the other hand am not so sure.

It will be a week or so before I know.

My immediate question is do I have them fix the caliper to the tune of $300?

I only need the vehicle for my other job 2 days next week, and my state inspection is up this month.

If they are replacing the caliper for $300, just let them do it but if they are just unseizing it I would replace it myself for less than $300. About the frame, if your rep says they will replace it, raise hell until they do, also file a claim with corporate Toyota about it.

Thank you. The entire caliper. I asked if he could just free it up, but he felt it could just seize again with the next application. Made sense.

I should note, however, that next to my vehicle was an '06 and on the other an '04. Both of them were having their frames replaced. What I don't know was whether Toyota was footing the bill. I suspect they were.

More and more of these frame issues popping up. I guess 8-9 years is the sweet spot for the rust to start penetrating all the way through.

I was told this morning that Toyota is going to replace my frame!

The only point of contention at this point is whether they will pay for a vehicle while the work is done.

I'm told that their response to these issues is based in part on the customer's loyalty. And because I had only recalls and some very minor work done at the dealer they weren't going to pay for a loaner. (It hasn't needed any other than oill changes and a battery.)

I actually own two Toyotas, and I suggested that that indicates a pretty decent loyalty. They're going to confer with Toyota and get back to me.

Yeah those front calipers seems to like to rust. Mine got rust where pads supposed to slide so one of the pads was weared at the angle. I used a file to clean up rust and had put new pads. So far so good.

How many miles on the truck?

I wonder if this is a determining factor in Toyota's frame replacement decisions.

That really sucks man. I'm starting to wonder about Toyota anymore with these rust issues. I mean really is that hard to properly coat a frame from the factory that won't rust in 8-9 years?

Well.....this is a bite in the ass - for obvious reasons. I haven't looked under my truck yet.....and hope I can get at least 4 more years out of it.

When I'm ready to buy a new truck..... will...... (thinking out loud here)

    1) They could render my frame failed and I'll get an AWESOME deal on a new truck?

    2) They could do nothing and my resale value is crap because of frame rot

Makes me wonder if they get some sort of insurance kick-back when they fail the frames & replace them.

Think about it.... How many 'new' trucks did they sell when the 15 year rust warranty came out on the 1st gens? Of those people who turned their trucks in...how many of those might have purchased a different brand truck if they weren't slapped with this frame issue and a 'tempting' deal to buy new?

C'mon Toyota!! Earn your customer loyalty the right way....GIVE US good reliable trucks (and frames)!!!

    (sorry, its early. Vent off)

This is what my 07 looks like after winter. Last fall this was wire brushed and re-painted with Rustoleum, and looked almost new. The passenger side still looks as good as the day I painted it.

    ^^^^ Eeeeewwwwwwww!

I'm starting to wonder if they've done ANYTHING to address this problem.

I'm thinking about taking a trip to NY and visiting a Krown shop about 30 seconds after my frame is replaced.

Might be worth seeing if they can coat the frame before it's under the vehicle. If you can get someone like Krown to coat a new frame before the cab is on it, that would ideal I would think.
