Finally have the tire money saved and l'm looking at buying some 255/85/16. I only wheel about once a month, but i love the way they look. I'm not planning on re-gearing anytime soon, so will these tires tear up my tranny or engine if i don't re-gear? By the way, I will be using my stock steelies and my truck is a reg cab 4cyl with a 5 speed.

you will be fine and if you wanna run a bigger tire this is the best way to go.....i love mine...they have a smaller contact patch when at street pressure and weigh less then 285's...much less rolling resistence also...they are also taller then 285's for better ground clearence.....if you had an auto you would have to worry about gearing but with a 4x4 4cyl 5spd...i believe you have 4.10 gears and will turn them just fine with a minimal loss in power...btw tall skinnys are awsome on the trail

I've read several different threads on the 255/85/16, and most of them talked about the truck just being sluggish starting out or little trim work will be needed. I really didn't see anything about it tearing up the motor or tranny. So just trying confirm, before making this purchase.

i have a 2.5in lift and had to trim a tiny bit off inner fenders....the auto guys are alil sluggish but standard guys dont have a too noticible difference.....id say i lost 5% acceleration...my truck is a 4.0 v6 but i only have 3.73 gears....your 4cyl has 4.10 gears which make up for the smaller motor....if your gonna go bigger then a 265-75-16 then the 255 are deff the way to go imo....285's will drag you down much more then the 255's and like i said you get better clearence with the 255's and better milage and less road noise

regear after you buy the tires. The motor and tranny will be fine if you don't, but trust me you will love having the power back and the engine and trans will thank you in the long run. They will be under a lot less load after regearing.

Thanks for the input. Just wanted to make sure I wouldn't tear up anything, being that this is also my DD. I will re-gear at a later time but I want to get a bumper and winch after my tires.
