A couple of weeks ago my heater blower quit working on anything but high speed. The next day it resumed working normally again and did so for those 2 weeks, but yesterday all speeds but high gone again. I have the part coming today and it should be a quick repair. Funny thing is that as reliable as my Tacoma has been this part never failed me on any of my previous POS GM products. But engines and transmissions are more important.

Not saying this is directly connected but...Check your cabin air filter, make sure its fresh and that mice haven't been piling terds and pine needles on top of it. Happened on my 2nd gen

Not a bad idea since I don't recall the last time I replaced it. But almost certainly not mice since this is my DD and lives outside.

I just don’t run my heater on 1 ever or 2 for short periods of time.
Lowest numbers have the highest heat generated in the resistor and wiring

Yeah, but 1 and 2 are where it needs to be for optimum comfort and quiet. The part is only $20 so no need to try to "hypermile" it.

It is likely not the resistor. It’s either a loose resistor connection or a loose/burnt fan blower connector. I have had both issues but never a bad resistor.

Kit came with a new connector... we'll see what's what when I get in there.

All great on topic answers, but I hate it when the, uhm, blower has resistance to blow.

    Sorry, had to…..

At least it doesn't suck. Because that would REALLY blow if it did!

Well, I got into this today and Chuy was spot on. Not the resistor. I wiggled the connector and the fan started working in all speeds again. It was indeed that same bad burned contact as mentioned in another thread here and that you see in everyone's photos from doing this job. The wires are fine, just that one fried contact. I'd like to replace just the contact but I don't have the tool for popping those out, nor do I know which tool it needs. So I am probably going to just cut the old plug off and solder up the new one. Not going to bother swapping the resistor for now.

And thanks to Archive for reminding me to change my overdue cabin air filter! Egads!

So, I'm confused by the colors of the wires shown in TSB. I have an '11 with the flat connector and was given the square connector as a replacement.
If I understand it, my old # 3 goes in 1, 2 goes into 4, 3 into 2, and 4 into 1. The colors do not look right on my monitor so I am just checking to be sure
    Thanks

So the updated Toyota resistor takes a square connector?

Not to sound like an idiot, but did they give you the wrong connector? If I recall correctly, I believe this issue also affects some of the early third gens as well? Possible they gave you a connector for a third-gen? Just spitballing.

I've seen this repair done, and it involved a new connector, but it was the flat four-pin connector as shown in the pictures a few posts above.

Yes - so you have to order the pigtail in order to make the resistor with square connector work. You can still get the "old style" resistor aftermarket. Not sure what you would get using the part number 87138-04070 from a dealer though. The square connector would require the pigtail 82141-04Q80. Places like Elmhurst Toyota (online) sells both as a set too.

The new resistor does look beefier, but I kind of don't see that the connector is beefier, which appears to be the REAL problem for a lot of people - unless the TRUE underlying problem is the old resistor design pulling too much amperage for certain settings.

The TSB I posted is dated August 2021, and covers 2005-2018.

    From what I see:

    Old 3 = New 1
    Old 4 = New 2
    Old 2 = New 3
    Old 1 = New 4

OK, interesting. I just went to the official Toyota OEM parts gateway and they have the new resistor... although the photos still show a flat connector. But when I entered the p/n for the pigtail with the square connector it says "no longer available". Too bad because I could get the resistor for $31 this way from my local dealer but not the pigtail. I found a kit with both on Amazon but that is $69.

This is what/where I ordered yesterday (hasn't shipped yet, but haven't gotten any notice that it's out of stock either). It DOES, however have a little blip about most OOS items usually ship in 1-3 biz days. total was about $51 with shipping to me in NH. They also list the pigtail alone for about $15.
