Yes, I know this has been discussed several times, but the threads haven't been active for some time and I hate bumping dead threads.

To preface this, I do not offroad, don't drive on gravel, this is all damage from the rock salt they use on PA/MD roads. Initially this started out with a few chips but I looked closer this weekend and what in the Hell!?

Yes, I do have more aggressive tires compared to the stock SR5. This was only due to the factory tires being completely terrible and unsafe in snow. This started before tire replacement.

Also, I did install mudflaps way before winter.

Seems to have done little in prevention in that area, but the rockers are good and clean.

Taking it in on Monday to my local dealer to look at. I fully expect them to tell me to pound sand. Thing is, this is a lease and I do not want them to ding me on return as "abuse".

So, I guess follow me along for this stupid journey that I gotta take :goingcrazy:

Like you said your truck is a lease and the chipping due to not enough tire coverage is a design issue nothing the user of the product can control and it shouldn't be your problem to correct. That's probably going to be determined by the dealer when it comes to the lease. Anyone who ends up owning a truck probably won't get anything out of the paint chipping as far as a warranty repaint or not taking a hit in resale.

I know I can hear salt flinging around and it sounds like rocks do it's probably just as hard if it's chipping the paint.

I guess documentation and a dealer vist or visits is the dance you need to do to protect yourself. Hopefully the dealer looks out for being a repeat customer.

The 4G only being in its 2nd year of production Toyota needs to come up with a soloution.

Get some running boards if you do not off road.

Yea this probably going to be a more of a CYA situation honestly. I have bought several vehicles from this dealer and only use their service department. We'll see how it goes. I also plan to lease another Tacoma/Tundra from them when this one is up.

Going to catch a lot of crap for leasing, but I swap trucks every 2-3 years so it makes sense for me.

That could help, I some times look at running as a damage multiplier in the event of a sideswipe. Running boards atleast serve a purpose and most will probably break away with ease. Winter climates also see ice and snow accumulations on and around the boards. These are two things keeping me from installing running boards.

The Tacoma and even the Tundra but it's worse on the Tacoma. There's all that unprotected rocker panel, there's a lot of it. I don't see Toyota changing the sheet metal design so it's going to be that way for like twenty years.

in the picture of the leading edge of the bed side . it looks raised up like salt build up not worn into the paint... wipe it all off and take another picture. also toyota is not going to do anything... even if they painted the bed sides it will just happen again soon as you drive it... so either find a way to stop it from happening or buy another truck.

Definitely not salt. I noticed it when washing the truck. Truck gets washed after every storm. It's down to the primer in that spot.

If in the off chance they paint it, I'll apply PPF in the spots it needs.

I'd probably benefit from leasing, it's probably better if you are staying in a Toyota or specifically a Tacoma because resale value, and interest rates where they are. If I was a Texan, the Tundra is probably what I'd want to drive since it's built in Texas. I'd probably stay in a Ford if I go with another fullsize, still like the SuperDuty, and the short bed regular cab, but I want something smaller.

You probably don't have too many miles driven in the salt. Kind of a worse than it looks situation.

I'm wondering if Under Ground isn't a little bit softer paint than say something like Bronze Oxide or something that looks more metallic?

I think it's the way the truck is designed, but the paint could definitely produce different results, like Super White. Only bring it up because, I think you have relatively low mileage.

Yea, a touch over 7,000 miles in 10 months. It's pretty gnarly in person. Maybe I'm over-reacting, but I've had 2nd and 3rd gens that did not do this. My 3rd gens the little plastic lip got tore up, but that was it.

I’m not an aerodynamicist, but if you widen the track while keeping the middle door section width narrow (garage-ability), perhaps it creates a slight inward pulling force for loose debris at speed. Notice SR5’s also spec smaller over-fenders than off-road oriented trims.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes, and what the aftermarket comes up with.

The previous generation Frontier was exactly the same way. The bed sticks out farther than the cab and gets beat to hell.

Tuffskinz. Rear ones fit great, but the front fitment require some "finesse". However for $100 for front and rear, no complaints.

I had PPF installed on my bedsides. Had them do the whole thing and no dings at all. Might be some thing to consider..just do the lower portions

Looks like there is already some PPF from the factory and two different applications. The PPF does not look like it's wraped around the the front of the bedside all the way. Obviously a new application of PPF would provide more coverage.

Is it the front tires that is throwing up the road crap? It looks like the inside of the front tires is where the debri comes from. Most of the flaps do not provide much coverage in that area.

    Edit

Nevermind those aftermarket flaps you have provide a lot of inner coverage. Must have been the OE Toyota flaps I was looking at.
