Does anyone know if the Tundra is having this same issue? Just curious because the gen4 looks like a scaled down Tundra to me. I ask this because I was contemplating getting a 2025 but if this is a design flaw I will keep my 2023. I’m definitely not buying a new truck and have to cover it with PPF.

One of the managers at work has a 3rd gen Tundra and said he doesn't have this issue.

Any vehicle with a larger hips is going to have rock chips on the rear quarter. My2015 BMW X5 has chips but I have ppf it. All of the new gen Tacomas have the factory ppf applied on them on the lower section although I think it needs to placed more in the upper section too.

The steps are useless has to be the running boards to protect from chips

If I was Toyota I'd be experimenting with composite bed sides, even unpainted ones. Maybe wrapping or using another material that can take the abrasion on the lower portion of the panel.

why cant an aftermarket company that makes bug guards for the hood make ones? that 3m double stick tape to the bed sides.... it would protect a lot more than a hood protector..

Who wants a truck you have to cover in armor to keep the paint on it. I think it’s a combination of poor design and bad paint.

ok poor design... toyota isnt going to change the design for another 7-8 years so gonna had to deal with that.. bad paint? what paint do you know of that can take a rock hit at 100mph or how ever fast they get ejected out of tires and handle that?!?! pretty sure not much..

Valid points, I’m sure Toyota is not going to do anything about it and for the time being unfortunately it has discouraged me from buying a 2025. I just can’t see buying a new truck and having to wrap it in armor.

I didn't get my PPF from Amazon until late and I was leaving early the next day for a road trip. First time doing PPF, rush job, and poor lighting but I wanted some protection before I left given all of the horror stories. 1,200 miles, all on road, but some snow and a lot of rocks on the road going through the Valles Caldera National Preserve. I have the "CA" mudguards and don't see any damage to the PPF I applied or the OEM strip of PPF. The imperfections that are visible are air/dirt under the PPF. $20 for the PPF and I probably have enough to reapply at least two more times. I'll redo it this weekend in daylight and make sure I keep the film clean.
