Trying to surpass the limits of the vehicle and expecting nothing to break is just insane. That said - it would be nice if they redesigned to avoid this catastrophic failure.

Lol…… Years of marketing with off road vehicles gives the impression that these vehicles can go anywhere.

Don't recall taking my brand new stock 1992 4X4 on a grade this steep. Looked very cool back then tho.

I've had the smoke several times. Some say the catch can helps. I still haven't done mine, but I probably should seeing as I'm in the repeat offender category.

Everything on this guys rig was new, screams brolander and he probably spent $20k on mods; this gave him false sense of confidence that his truck could summit K2.

Rake is pretty close to the same. Possibly Daschund needs a little block to bring the rear higher

That’s why I’m putting a 22RE in my truck. Really looking forward to the 116HP and 140Ft-lbs of torque. I’ll never blow it up on anything steep, because I’ll barely be able to jump a curb.

No money, all went to truck...
There's so much speculation on the quality of the engine. But we have no idea how this owner treated his motor. It was low on oil already. Did he change his oil on schedule? Did he take care of his truck? I'd bet it was more about poor maintenance than motor quality...

The 1 qt low indicated on the dipstick is on the ground and skidplate made by the rods punching a hole in the block and oil pan

yeah, because a guy running a $60k plus rig with Kings, full bumper, rack, snorkels, 35s is going to skimp on $50 oil changes….

Never saw the oil on the ground or the holes. Where are you getting this information?

That’s ok. I just popped a wheely in my ‘17 at 6000RPM and forgot all about it.

I LOVED my 22R!! Wish I could have it in my 3rd gen. I think the only motor more bullet proof was the dodge slant six!

    Damn, that’s steep.

    I’m sure.

    I agree.

Nice to see the 3rd gen O/R has this feature.

Forgive my ignorance but I’ve only owned 2nd gens (current 2015) and I have a few questions regarding this issue.

For those that have had this “Smoke and/or knocking noise on incline/decline issue” was their truck at such a steep angle that it was out of the specified range of what Toyota set the inclinometer at?

Is this still an issue on 2023’s?

I’m on the fence about buying a new ‘23 O/R or not. Even looking at 2021 Tundras (mpg’s aren’t a concern, I drive very little) but the size may be an issue for off-roading.

Ive had my Tacoma at odd angles at times and never had an issue. I’ve also seen many 3rd gens doing the same thing and no issues.

In each of these pictures my truck was idling and anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes in that angle.

I’d hate to buy a new truck and not be able to do what I do with my 2nd gen
