This is just a poor design for offroading on the 3.5L. The 1GR-FE predecessor never had an issue with severe angles.

Before I went to Moab I installed jtl oil catch can and my truck was at some pretty good angles and never experienced any smoke from tail pipe . I was also going threw obstacle at low rpms

Feel free to share them. I constantly hear about 3.5's ingesting oil at extreme angles. I have never heard or seen a 1GR-FE having issues.

much larger less experienced group of owners taking their trucks to areas they wouldn’t except now they see a video of someone else and they have to try and one up them. Way back when - it was about getting to a destination and returning without damage. Now it is ‘how tough of a trail can I conquer?’ ‘They did it let me try.’ And then getting posted on here so you know about it. I think catch can will help for many of these but super extreme angles maybe not.

If a obstacle is gonna put my truck in jeopardy on a trail definitely try an alternative if its possible.

@tonered you posted a single example of a 1GR-FE having an issue at angles in a very non-specific thread. I'm not convinced.

Edit: I'm simply stating that the 4.0 is superior to the 3.5 when it comes to oiling at severe angles. I'm not posting again in this thread.

Is there any upgrade or mod that can be done to prevent this?

Nah bud, most motors have this issue regardless of make or manufacturer, including the beloved 4.0L 1GR and even the 3.4L 5VZ. You need to spend more time on the trail if you think otherwise.

So basically don't take your stock engine to Moab or you risk blowing it up. That kind of sucks, whats the angle where the shit hits the fan?
If you have the Toyota connect it'll be tough to say you were driving down the road when it happened for warranty, pretty sure the lat and long will be with the engine codes.

Folks say that an oil catch can help for the uphill issue? I've been resisting that.

Yes. @WarFab Armor knows it works in that situation.

Check out my build thread (Beginning of Money Pit)
personal experience, there has only been one time on an incline where I had smoking. It happened as I continued to attempt getting up a incline that was straight mud, leaves, and off camber (definitely a pucker factor that night). I believe @3pooches witnessed it and told me about it. It had never happened to me before that night, and to answer anyone's question regarding gearing, Im on 5.29s and 35s. Again, this didnt happen after one attempt. It was after multiple attempts and sitting on the incline for at least 5 minutes. I think the angle the truck was at most likely caused the oil to smoke as was explained earlier in this post. Truck still runs great now.

He may even have a picture of the hill
