Don't worry, the 4.0l gang will still be whining about the truck motor battle cry.

The message that the dude mentions of the beginning of the video, I've seen it on my truck. I think I was with @Chadr7858 and John at the time, but it was a fairly steep incline and my truck just stopped in the middle of the hill and that "low oil high temp" message displayed on the dash. I don't remember the exact verbage. Just turned it off and back on again and it was fine. It didn't happen when I went to MOAB though so I really don't know why it did on that particular day.

That’s a bit of a stretch. I’ve had my stock 3rd Gen in Moab and didn’t have any fears of blowing it up.

I’m sure countless others have as well. Just be aware and use common sense.

Yeah. It's kinda sad, esp when they ask for info, it's given (not just by me), and they go on flyin' blind. :plane:

Check out my build thread (Beginning of Money Pit)

Total 2nd Gen production from 2005 to 2015 is 1,620,621.(So 3rd gens are at the same number in half the time) I think the reason we hear more about it, is the fact that social media usage and "doing it for the gram" are a real thing the last few years, where people during the early 2nd gens for the most part where not modding their trucks or going offroad as frequently.

This isnt to say that no one did, but the offroad community has grown significantly over the last few years, then throw in overlanders in 3rd gens, and new people to the segment because the 3rd gen had much more features that customers wanted.

The only rebuttal to the numbers I posted would be if you counted every vehicle with the same drivetrain. Then try and figure out how many people with FJs and 4runners wheeled them. (Id say more so on the FJ side, less so on the 4runner )

I haven’t noticed any smoking, but a few times I’ve had the low oil pressure warning displayed when at an extreme angle (20+ degrees on either axis) for a long period with the engine at low rpm. Burning of oil isn’t what I worry about, but low oil pressure is. I’m not sure how an oil can can prevent oil starvation.

My recommendation: Get off the incline as fast as safely possible.

I do wonder how much engine rpm figures into this. Could the issue be mitigated by keeping the rpm higher? This is on the assumption that the oil pumps more oil at higher rpm. I’m not sure how much I want to use my truck as a ginea pig. :)

This trail limo managed to do it! (complete with cheesy dramatic music) I was curious to see the actual obstacle since the truck was sitting on flat ground in the Matt's Offroad Video. That must have been fun to back down with no power.

I have no horse in this race. Most engines starve for oil at extreme angles. Don't know why this is turning into a dick swinging competition between the 2nd and 3rd gen guys. I'm guessing the guy in the original vid got stuck halfway and was at the angle for awhile, it's not like it instantly exploded at the sight of the incline.

The most important question though - IS HE ON TACOMAWORLD??????:crapstorm:

This is the trend on this forum. One finds a problem and all of a sudden it's an epidemic. Never mind the countless 3rd gens that have made moab and other severely steep trails. There are tons of 3rd gens that have made that exact trail. One engine blows and someone here has diarrhea. This forum has been a snowflake haven for far to long.

I agree. We can't get to the point that the engines have an issue before getting into the numbers actually affected. Yeah, likely too many 3rd Gens, but it isn't exclusive as proven.

some observational anecdote. It seems like the the engine becomes oil starved when high roll angle as opposed to pitch angle.

I had low oil pressure and trans temp when I accidentally shut down my truck while rolling backwards on a sand hill while in drive.

I just want a 2F LC engine in it.

Hold enough oil to fill the Exxon Valdez and I've had my 40 on inclines so steep that I was glad the engine weighed substantially more then a BBC. :anonymous:
