LoL! True, but I'm close to the point where Toyota can't tag in.

As you acknowledged, I'm not concerned about blow-by. I've definitely had my truck in the "bad" types of steep orientation in the last year, and I plan to continue doing that kind of driving, so I like the idea of having a bit of a buffer before cylinder 6 starts chugging 0W20 and trying to escape the block.

In normal driving, it is said that you only have to empty it at normal service intervals. In my past experience, that is mostly foam / water, not liquid oil.

I'm orginally from WV. One leg is naturally longer than the other due to growing up in the hills.

As in a single field terraced at the 50 yard line, or different fields at different levels?

Those guys should be running through a swimming pool full of rust. Old Toyotas had nice engines, but the rest was hot garbage.

After doing the headgaskets in a 93 4runner for the 5th time in its life.

We like to forget about that one

now the 3vz-fe? Just as good as the ol 5vz

all that being said the 3.5 isn’t bad. It’s just all the extra shit strapped on it that makes less forgiving on oil issues.. WAY more stuff going on in this head than the Toyotas of old. The old bucket and shim valve trains can run on like no oil. Which is why fighter planes from the Second World War had similar setups

So from my understanding after reading through these threads, on a steep incline the oil catch can will help keep oil out of the intake...until it gets filled up. The oil catch wouldn't help on a steep decline. My question is would baffles in the oil pan help in both cases (incline and decline)? If so, are there any drawback to installing baffles. One thing I could see is that it would take up space and reduce the volume of the oil pan.

A baffle sold by Wilhelm for the 2nd-fe has proven to help oil pressure in racing due to keeping oil by the pickup, but the design in the fwd oil pan is pretty different from the trucks. The main issue here is the oil pools up in the head at too steep of an incline. Baffle won’t help since the oil is still going to be pumped up to the head.

A dry sump oil system is probably the only full proof way to fix this issue.

be careful not to do what someone on a forum came up with to do. You could be making things worse. The real cause of any problem is still known. That there is an actual problem is also still unknown. A, not even handful, of failures out of a few million trucks is not enough of a pattern to matter at this point. There is to much guessing on the problem. Like I said, I have seen countless 3rd gens go up that exact spot with no issue, so there is literally no proof of anything yet. It is just as likely that the gearing is at fault with bigger tires, causing a heavy load at low rpm on the engine, which is a bad condition.

Yeah they get more and more complicated every year. They were technologically amazing before and are even more so now. Warning to those just tuning in: that may not be what you're looking for in a vehicle. Buy something else!

Toyota designs vehicles for the 99% use case. There's no point in designing it for the 1% of people (probably even less) that will heavily modify and push the vehicle to the extreme. Gone are the days when everything is over-built. We have better tools to do better analyses and manufacture more precisely. Over-built is less efficient and more expensive. And that is something Toyota knows very well.

The user shouldn't expect that every vehicle should be able to handle the extreme. May be it's an unpopular opinion, but if you're at an extreme angle while rock crawling, and your motor drowns itself in oil, Toyota is 100% within the right in saying that is an example of mis-use. They aren't responsible for every scenario. If you want to do that with your Tacoma, then expect to have to fix it. If you aren't sure if the 3.5L can handle it, then get a different rig w/a tried and true motor. Shit breaks when you push it beyond its design intent.
