Hey guys and gals. I'm in a pickle and could really use your help. I have an '85 4x4 that I just finished swapping in a 1996 (distributor type, no cam sensor, non-EGR) 2.7l 3RZ-FE. It's been months in the making, and I took my time and thought I did everything right.

A couple of days ago, it was the moment of truth. I turned the key, and it cranked over beautifully but did not start. I have searched this forum, and have tried everything suggested including: replaced distributor (& checked TDC), replaced ICM, replaced plugs and wires, replaced crankshaft position sensor. I've got power to the distributor, but no spark out. The coil checks out good according to the FSM. I've pulled #1 plug wire and put a good plug into it and tried to get it to spark - nothing. No lights on the timing light when I crank it. There is fuel to the rail, and fuel going into the cylinders. I'm at a loss of where to check next. The wiring harness is brand new from Offroad Solutions (ORS) and isn't knicked or cut that I can find. The harness came with the OBDII connector, which throws no codes when I turn it on or try to crank it. I'm not sure if that is reliable though, since it hasn't yet started up. The ECU is out of a 1996 Regular cab 2.7L 4x4 manual, and matches my rig and the engine...

As far as I can tell, the next thing it could be is the ECU, but I don't know how to test that. It is a JDM engine, if that helps. As far as I can tell, the only difference is that it is non-EGR. Everything else about it seems the same as any other 3RZ.

Any other ideas as to what it could be? I am stumped at this point. Thanks in advance for your help.

Make sure also when you installed distributor it was at TDC and the rotor at 12 o clock when sliding in

He makes all sorts of decals/stickers. I got a bunch of others (coolant level, chassis lube card, fuse box cover, etc.). High quality and quick to ship.

Definitely. Slid it in and it turned right to #1.

I know it sounds stupid but is the rotor in the distributor?
I've seen one no start and it was because the person forgot to put the rotor in when he changed the cap and rotor.

Yeah, the rotor is installed. I have a new ECU on the way. There really isn't anything else it could be at this point. I know every once in a while a new part will be bad on delivery, but that's pretty unlikely, especially when they all test good prior to install. We shall see....

I swapped out the 22RE for a low mileage 3RZ and had to get the matching ECU.
