I have read every thread on dash cams I can find on this site. I am a little frustrated because the search function on TW could use some help, but nonetheless, I found several threads and read them all.

There are a few people who have successfully tapped in to the wiring in the overhead console using the brown(ish)*hot* and white/black *gnd* wires.

I have metered those wires and at least one of the brown(ish) wires are 5v switched, but they do not seem to capable of running my 5v dash cam.

Probing a few of the other wires, I was able to locate a 12v switched wire, and I tapped into it using the cig lighter/power port adapter which steps the voltage down to 5v. I modded the adapter to have 2 leads coming out instead of the cig socket contacts. Bench testing this against a 12v power supply works just fine and powers the camera right up.

The problem I am having is that when tapping into the 12v wire under the overhead console, the blue LED on the adapter lights up, but as soon as I plug the usb cable into it and plug the other ind into the camera, the LED dims and the camera will not power up. If I take that entire assembly (camera, adapter, leads and usb cable) into the house and plug it into my power supply, the camera lights right up. That test confirms that my adapter, camera and USB cable are all in good working order.

Something is up with the 12v power u under the console. It does not like having another device tapped in to it.

Anyone have any ideas what I am up against here? I know I can run an add a fuse circuit down to the kick panel fuse box, but would rather keep it simple and just grab power from the dome light area circuit.

As a side note, I have the exact same camera in the wifes Subaru and grabbed power from the dome light circuit as I am trying to do here, and it has been working for nearly a year like that.

    Any help greatly appreciated.
