Another engine issue for me

So, let me set the scene.

I drive over to my mom's house to pick her up and take her to a doctor's appointment. When I arrive at her house the truck is at the normal operating temp of 194 degrees, so says my scan gauge.

The truck sits for about 15 minutes before I return and push the start button. Watch the video for what happens when the engine starts and runs through the start up cycle. TAP, TAP, TAP, TAP, sounds like my dad's 1982 Dodge Mirada after 80k miles on the 318.

Seconds later, as seen in the second video, I push the start button and all is good, no tapping sound. I take my mom back and forth to the hospital with no engine tapping, even after several more test restarts.

    Any ideas?

Of course, its going back to the dealer with this video. Maybe it is related to the timing cover reseal job (34,500 miles) that was performed about 2,500 miles ago? Current miles 37,000.

With the sound levels from you two talking, it sounds like it might be the normal DI cleaning cycle that happens at random times. Combined with the high pressure fuel pump, it can sound a bit like a modern diesel.

Of course, a friend of mine is struggling to diagnose a tapping sound in his sister's 2016 4Runner that has no DI. He thinks it might be a stuck valve, but the dealer is standing firm that it is normal.

That seems louder than the usual Tacoma ticking.

Yeah, like way louder. Reminds me back in the day when you had a collapsed lifter.

I tend to agree. 2GRs have always been a bit noisy at start up with piston slap and hard injector tick. But the DI version is even more so at times.

Saturday afternoon I went to the local dealer and was able to show the video to the lead tech who just weeks earlier performed the timing cover reseal job on my engine. He watched the video several times before telling to leave the truck with him for a few days. While the service writer was drawing up the paperwork I asked the tech one more time, "you did hear the tapping noise?" He laughed and said, "more like a knocking noise".
The tech stopped short of giving me a reason why that knocking noise happened on a hot restart, however, he did tell me that internal engine "knocking" is not normal.

    Stay tuned...

Mine does it too from time to time I've always been told it's normal by the local dealership interested to see what yours has to say.

you guessed it, related to the timing cover job. not a rod knock, something not properly tighten during the timing cover job, IMO

Doesn’t sound normal. Way too loud for the direct injectors. Sounds like something inside hitting.

Being in some kind of carport amplifies it.

All I could here was the loud exhaust, or was that the engine noise?

Yeah I agree on the carport or garage amplifies it a bit. Wonder what it sound like outside cause mine does have a ticking and it is only 6 months old. I noticed more going through a McDonald's drive as I ride along a wall to the take out window. Just saying

Try to replicate that sound outside with open space.

The truck is still at the dealership, as soon as I get an update, I'll post those results.

Trust me, the carport did not amplify that knocking noise. That knocking sound was loud, like mentioned above, similar to a piece of metal inside of the engine is colliding with another piece of metal.

    UPDATE:
Just received a call from the dealer. The timing cover reseal failed. The timing cover is leaking again and will be re-repaired. Ugh!

While the techs are inside of the engine they will look for the part or parts that are causing the engine slap (slap is the word the tech used). As of now, they are not giving any hints as to what is causing the slapping sound on a hot restart.

    Stay tuned for updates.

    UPDATE:
My truck was returned to me this morning.

The engine noise: The techs drained the oil looking for any metal shavings from the slapping noise. They advised no metal shavings were found, however, they do not have an answer for the intermittent hot-start-slapping noise. So, I now have a fresh oil change and new filter element.

Oil leak: Additionally, when the fresh oil put bank into the engine a dye was added to better help the techs identify where on the engine the oil is leaking. In two weeks I'm scheduled to return the truck so the tech can look for neon yellow oil leaking from a seal or seals on the front of the engine.

The tech explained he needs to first see where the timing cover reseal repair failed before opening up the engine for a second time.

A bit disappointing, however, I do realize there are certain steps to every process.
