I've had a ticking sound coming from the fan for the last few months when the a/c or heater is on. It speeds up when the fan speed increases, so I assume that's where the noise originates. A couple months ago, I turned the fan on low and nothing happened. I turned it up a notch and still nothing. I turned it to high and it immediately started working. That started happening about once every two weeks until today it completely quit working on all setting except high.

So.....what should I check first? Is the fan motor going bad, or is it some kind of connection or relay before the fan motor?

Is there a good thread that explains how to check this stuff step by step?

The first thing I would do is buy the new version of the blower motor. The ticking will not get better and will soon drive you insane. I think the part number ends in -043. I've had mine for a couple years and it hasn't made a peep.

I know I remember reading of other people in here having the issue of the fan only working on high. I can't remember if that's the motor or something else. I'm sure someone will chime in.

Just a heads up - the ticking was already driving me insane ;)

Might want to check if there's a TSB on this. I read something about this awhile ago but can't find it now :notsure:

Just had my blower motor replaced under warranty. 2015 AC with about 4000 miles on it. When (if) they start to make noise it's my understanding the only true fix is replacement. New motor is quiet. I find it interesting that my 2003 Tacoma had the same issue.

+1 for the 043 blower motor. This is the second motor I've purchased but it's been great for a couple of months now.

I bought my '08 used a couple years ago, so warranty isn't an option. I'd like to go through the cheap/quick DIY checks first then replace the motor when/if that is the issue.

Just took the glove box off and checked the cabin air filter for the first time since I bought this truck. Pretty gross....

    Cabin Air Filter.jpg

Anyway, I also found the wire harness and followed it to what appeared to be the connector everyone has mentioned. It has the EXACT same burned terminal as all the others. I guess I'll first try putting some electric grease on that and see if it helps and go from there.

 Reminds me that I need to check my cabin air filter.

Occasional kicking does seem to help (at least mine and a buddy's). Also turning up the radio :)

    Good luck,

UPDATE: I bought a tiny pack of dielectric grease and applied it to the connector terminals. It fixed the problem for the time being.

You know that Dieelectric grease is a non-conductor right?

The cause for the burned connector is because it is loose acting like a heater. To properly repair it you need to replace the connector and terminals. You could also have a defective resistor package.

It will get hot again unless you properly repair the cause. Which at this point seems to be a loose connector terminal.

Thanks for the response. I didn't know dielectric grease was non-conducting. I had just seen where people suggested doing this at the terminal, so I figured for $1.39 I'd try it out..........and it worked. So rather than spending extra time and $$$ to replace stuff that may or may not be a problem, I'll just see how this fix does and go from there.

Lots of people don't understand the point of dielectric grease in connectors. Mainly used to seal & prevent moisture intrusion and prevent corrosion in electrical connections. This is like in spark plug boots, electrical connectors that are in exposed areas outside of the vehicle.

    This^^

Dielectric grease does NOT improve the conductivity of electricity in any way.

Is there a better alternative? Just curious...

UPDATE: The fan started failing again, and will start working if I turn to HIGH. Otherwise it works for a bit and then dies. I have been running it with no filter the last couple days as I await the ones I purchased online. Looks like I'm back to the drawing board...

The latest OEM blower motor part number started squeaking 6 months after I installed the replacement. This was the fourth OEM blower motor that developed a low speed squeak. I just went with a $65 Lifetime guarantee blower from AutoZone as a replacement.

As an FYI, have never run a filter in my 2005 (2005 models have the filter opening, but we're not equipped from the factory with the filter until the 2006 model year)
